More great observations of Comet 12P by our worldwide @comet_chasers @mar_ele (Greece) @stmarysbridgend (Wales) this morning. Here's an example of what we're seeing #MilleniumFalcon @faulkestel @LCO_Global @OU_SPS @OUCymru @senoj_draddots @SpaceAmbassador

Well done @NASA for safely returning #OSIRISREx! ๐
Our Near-Earth Object Coordination Centre #NEOCC managed to spot the spacecraft just after separation. Check it out ๐

"Our atmosphere thankfully protects us from small, daily #asteroid impacts. That's exactly what we don't want to happen today as @NASA soon brings home ancient asteroid samples to land safely, and pristinely, to be studied for decades to come," says Marco Micheli, Astronomer in ESA's Near-Earth Object Coordination Centre #NEOCC who made the observations.

After a journey of nearly 3.9 billion miles, the #OSIRISREx asteroid sample return capsule is back on Earth. Teams perform the initial safety assessmentโthe first persons to come into contact with this hardware since it was on the other side of the solar system.

Tomorrow, @NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft will drop off a sample from ancient asteroid #Bennu.
๐ญHere is the first image of OSIRIS-REx when it was 4.66 million km from Earth on 16 September as seen by ESAโs Optical Ground Station telescope in Tenerife.

@comet_chasers has spotted another outburst for 12P (a bit smaller than the last one, but then 5 magnitude outbursts don't happen very often!) Thanks to our international observers, and Richard Miles for the analysis. More details in our (first) ATel ๐ astronomerstelegram.org/?reaโฆ

Latest images from our #12P Campaign - great teamwork!
Now we're using 2m @faulkstel to try to determine the nucleus rotation period.
I'm sure setting up observations of the Millenium Falcon will be very popular when @senoj_draddots takes @comet_chasers to @eisteddfod next week!

I did some education outreach yesterday at @stmarysbridgend with @comet_chasers and @FLO_UK and the children took this photo of a sunspot. They used remotely a telescope in Spain which has a special Hydrogen Alpha filter to make it safe and to see detail.
