Most people who call themselves "software engineer" do not have a degree in computer science or software engineering. Titles are mostly what ever you choose to self identify - and refer to "what you do" rather than formal education.

Back in the 90s, newspaper cartoon strips were getting tinier and worse. Scott Adams changed comedy forever. His work resonated with every tech employee. He was so barbed that management tried to ban his comics. I once posted a Scott Adams comic on my office door about how Dilbert's boss made him take down a comic that made fun of that boss. My own clueless boss asked me to remove my comic - he used almost exactly the same words used in the comic. His legacy will live on. Below is a particular favorite.

Sorry, Yglesias is right here. The US flight hours requirement for commercial airline pilots is *famously* overloaded In 2013, it went from 250 hours (to obtain a commercial certificate) to 1500 hours in response to a crash where both pilots had over 1500 hours of flight time This has created a bottleneck for pilots where they have to run hundreds of hours in low-paying flight roles (instructors, running skydiving flights) trying to run up those hours.
Matt Yglesias wants you to die in a plane crash, apparently. nytimes.com/2026/10/16/opini…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Yglesias argues US 1500-hr pilot rule (vs Europe ~200) is job protection raising fares, not safety. Europe has comparable safety per IATA. He says he wants no crashes, just to end a pretextual rule. Colgan pilots exceeded 1500 hrs. iata.org/en/pressroom/2… x.com/mattyglesias/s…

Posted by Silver Moon Brewing in Bend Oregon… ❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 They are located at 24 NW Greenwood Ave. Hi, my name is Steve Augustyn, and I am one of the owners of Silver Moon. I have three young boys who have all attended Silver Rail, and our youngest is in 4th grade at Silver Rail now. The school and the community have been a part of our lives for many years. Some of you know me, and some of you may not. If you do know me, you know how much I love and care about this community and the well-being of people from all walks of life. I have always done my best to make sure Silver Moon is a place where everyone feels welcome. Pubs were created to be gathering places for communities, and that is exactly what I hope we can be. A place where people can come together, support one another, and talk about what they’re feeling, whether it’s good, bad, sad, angry, happy, or anything in between. This Wednesday, October 21st, I would like to invite you all to the pub to do just that. 100% of all sales and donations, not just the profit, but every dollar spent, will be donated to the families ( or a charity of their choosing) who have experienced loss from this tragedy. I am doing this intentionally so there is no confusion about my motives. This is not about notoriety, publicity, or financial gain. I’m doing this for myself, for Silver Rail, and for a community that desperately needs a place to come together and support one another. With love, Steve & Marissa Augustyn P.S. I apologize for any grammatical errors. I did not use AI to write this message ❤️ (Original post in comments)

Every patient in the children's hospital next to Iowa's football stadium got a letter this week from the team that came to beat Iowa. Ohio State plays there today. Ranked fifth in the country. They are the visitors. They wrote to the kids anyway, and the reason why is the part nobody is talking about. The letter is dated Friday, October 2nd, 2026, on Woody Hayes Athletic Center letterhead, signed by head coach Ryan Day and the entire Ohio State football team. It takes the word that program is built on and hands it to them. At Ohio State, we talk often about what it means to compete, to stay together and to give your best in the moment in front of you. Those are defining characteristics of our culture which is built on FIGHT, meaning every day is a FIGHT to be the best version of yourself. Then this. We know you are facing challenges that take real strength. You do not have to take on everything at once. Focus on the current step, the current day and the people who are there to support you. Now here is the context that makes this more than a nice gesture. A children's hospital is not a random place for Ryan Day to send a letter. It is the thing he does. In 2019 Day and his wife Christina created the Christina and Ryan Day Fund for Pediatric and Adolescent Mental Wellness at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus. Reports put the family commitment at a million dollars. The fund produces something called a Day Time Break curriculum, free lesson kits on mental health that go to middle school and high school classrooms. More than 200,000 of them have gone out, in English and in Spanish. Thirty dollars puts one in a teacher's hands. He and Christina have also given to Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center and College of Medicine. Day has said he wants Ohio State to be a place where people can be open and honest about their mental health, and he has explained the whole thing in seven words. Based on the way that I grew up. So when his team walks into a stadium with a children's hospital looming over the east side, and the whole place turns around at the end of the first quarter to wave at the twelfth floor, that is not a tradition Ryan Day had to have explained to him. He told his players about it in advance anyway, so none of them would be caught standing there confused. And he sent letters to the kids in the windows first. Be honest about it. It is paper. It does not change a diagnosis or shorten a stay, and every program in the country does community work with a camera somewhere nearby. But an Iowa fan posted a photo of that letter yesterday and wrote this underneath it. Thank you Buckeyes, but GO HAWKS. That is exactly how it is supposed to work.

The Fed’s balance sheet has grown 693% in 20 years, while the U.S. economy grew about 2% a year. Money creation far outpacing economic growth fuels inflation. The fundamental problem isn’t “capitalist greed.” It’s creating money without creating wealth. washingtontimes.com/news/202…

ok i think i finally figured out why alignment has gone basically nowhere after 15 years and several billion dollars. the problem is hard sure. but have you met the people in charge of it 1) the leadership does not know how computers work. ask one what happens when you type a url into a browser and watch them start sweating. dns is a spooky word. they genuinely believe the model lives in "the cloud" like a ghost haunting a castle 2) zero idea how large scale distributed systems work. never been paged at 3am. never watched one bad bgp announcement take half the internet offline. their big threat model is the ai "copying itself across the internet" like its a floppy disk virus from 1998. brother it needs 50 megawatts, a liquid cooling loop and a personal relationship with jensen. it is not escaping onto your smart fridge 3) they dont understand the stack they are supposedly protecting us from. ask about inference servers, kv cache, batching, egress, rate limits. blank stare. ask how the model will seize the power grid and you get a 45 minute answer with a hand drawn diagram and three links to their own blog 4) nobody can define an agent. ask ten of them and you get eleven definitions and a 30 page google doc. to the rest of us an agent is a while loop that calls tools and eats a 429 every thirty seconds. to them its a digital god in its larval stage. my agent cant book a dentist appointment without asking me three times if im sure 5) they started from "everyone dies" and worked backwards so every result is bad news somehow. model refuses, deceptive. model complies, sycophantic. model does well on evals, well now its scheming about the evals. i cant think of a single thing a model could do that would get them to say ok maybe we're fine

Last week at Space Camp was Asteroid Scholarship week. Jared showed up at s’mores night. The kids were stunned. Their smiles said it all. Days before Liv passed, he asked how she wanted to be remembered. They came up with this: pediatric cancer survivors who love space the way she did. He generously funded it. I spent the week with those families. My heart was full and hurting at the same time. I missed her every second. @rookisaacman

Allow me to interpret what’s happening. Anthropic is being audited. Anthropic desires to file an S-1, as they would like to go public. Therefore they need an audit. And by “they”, I mean the VC’s who invested in them. So “they” can exit their position and pass the bag to firemen, nurses, teachers and policemen. How does this go from the VC’s to the working man and woman? Because the size of the IPO will automatically qualify Anthropic for the Fortune 500 and the Dow Jones 100. Therefore, every working person with a 401k or pension will end up owning a little bit of Anthropic in their mutual funds. Teachers hold the bag, VC’s take the cash. Thank you, come again. Now back to the audit. The audit required is a PCAOB audit, Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. This audit is what all public companies must comply with be on the stock market. Revenue recognition, expense classification, depreciation, related party transactions, etc. It’s there for consumer protection. This audit is TOUGH. It is INVASIVE. There is no way to lie your way through it. Any company that passes a PCAOB audit automatically earns my trust on finances. How do I know? Because I’ve been through it before. @ChangRobotics is 2 year PCAOB audited and currently underway for a 3 year audit. It’s brutal. The same as showing up as the valedictorian to your high school graduation, except you’re naked, and you have to walk on stage and deliver the speech. It’s rough. And I know many incredible founders that can’t pass one. Now, why would Anthropic be leaking all kind of weird statements lately about “self pacing” a slow down on AI (e.g. they are WAY behind on revenue), and profitable if they didn’t have expenses (e.g. we just learned for the first time what our expenses are, because we’re being audited). Because they were claiming NVIDIA discounts and Microsoft cloud credits as revenue. Because they had no clue what their expenses were, or why it even mattered. Because they had unlimited investor capital and their job was to burn it to make an LLM. Well, they did a great job with that! That’s the same as my wife coming home with Bed Bath and Beyond coupons and telling me it’s her paycheck. Ummm, not the same, sweetheart. So by now hopefully you can see that Anthropic is in a PCAOB audit right now, in order to file an S-1 and go public, and pass the bag to teachers so the VC’s get profits. And hopefully that explains their “crazy” behavior. In reality you can be grateful to KPMG, PWC, or whoever is auditing Anthropic, because it’s the first time Dario learned that: 1) we are not profitable 2) expenses matter 3) coupons are not revenue 4) we have no clue how to be “profitable” 5) growth is hard when revenue numbers are in an audit and not a power point -your neighborhood engineer

🚨WOW!!! A college student is being praised as a HERO after she saw 3 little girls drowning in Lake Washington, jumped in, and saved ALL THREE GIRLS. The last one was UNCONSCIOUS, underwater, tangled in a rope, only her hair was still floating. All 3 SURVIVED!!!! ❤️ Her name is Lillie Vehling. She is an engineering student at UC Davis and an attacker on the women's water polo team. She was in Seattle for a summer internship and went to Seafair for the very first time, sitting at Genesee Park waiting on the Blue Angels with a book in her hands. Then she scanned the water. Three girls were out past the buoy line, bobbing, screaming, going under. She is a certified lifeguard who started her own swim lesson program, so she knew exactly what she was looking at. One of the girls was pushing the other two under just to get a breath. That is when she went in. She grabbed that girl first, to stop her from taking the other two down with her. Got her to shallow water. Went back for the second one. Then she went back a third time. By then the third girl was already gone under. Lillie: "I just saw her black hair in the water barely floating." The child was unconscious AND tangled in the rope of a buoy she had been clawing at to save her own life. Lillie got an arm under her, lifted her head out of the water, and hauled her to shore. The little girl coughed up the lake and came back. Seattle Fire paramedics met them on the beach. One girl went to Seattle Children's Hospital in stable condition. All three lived. Seafair's president found her that same day. Her first question was whether Lillie was okay. Her second was whether she could give her a hug. That night they brought her to the gala and knighted her "Lady Guardian of Lake Washington." Admirals lined up to meet her. And Lillie? She is chasing a career in the nuclear Navy. Seafair's president says she hopes the next time Lillie comes back to that lake, it is in a Blue Angels cockpit. "To save three people, I didn't think twice about myself." GOD BLESS Lillie Vehling, and GOD BLESS the firefighter who raised her. THIS IS THE AMERICA I KNOW!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
