What if a controlled substance waste review could begin with evidence instead of reconstruction? That question resonated throughout yesterday’s IHFDA sessions. Pharmacy and diversion teams need to know what happened at the point of waste, while clinicians need a process that fits the work they’re already doing. At the Codonics booth, we’re demonstrating how the Safe Waste System™ (SWS) identifies the syringe, measures liquid controlled substance waste, draws it into a non-retrievable container, and creates a waste-event record with data for pharmacy review and reconciliation. The takeaway: technology changes quickly. Hospital infrastructure doesn’t. Pharmacy needs a seat at the table early. 𝗔 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗥 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗥. Wrong-drug selections can happen anywhere along the medication journey—including during preparation, before the drug ever reaches the OR. The more important question is: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁? For perioperative medications, there are three important checkpoints hospitals should consider: 𝗔𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Is the medication electronically verified from the manufacturer barcode before it is prepared? 𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲: Does the prepared medication carry an easy-to-read, compliant label with a machine-readable barcode that preserves its identity for downstream verification? 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Is that barcode actually scanned to reconfirm the medication and concentration before it reaches the patient? ISMP guidelines support this layered approach, calling for machine-readable codes on syringe and infusion labels and the implementation of machine-readable verification to confirm medication selection prior to administration. This is where standardization matters. With the Codonics Safe Label System®, scanning the source vial or ampoule during preparation provides visual and audible verification of the medication and concentration, then creates a full-color, TJC-compliant barcoded syringe label. That barcode can then support another safety check before administration. With SLS Administer Mode, the prepared syringe can be scanned for visual and audible confirmation of the drug and concentration, along with expiration status. With SLS-WAVE™, the barcode can be scanned into the AIMS/EHR for electronic documentation and another visual verification immediately before administration. In supported Epic® Anesthesia environments (November 2021 and later), additional audible drug-name verification and allergy alerts provide another safety check. Those numbers caught our attention in the August 𝘗𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘺 𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 & 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘺 𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 report—not because barcoding is new, but because they show how much opportunity remains within hospitals to move medication preparation from manual processes to standardized, electronic workflows. “𝗡𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘆.” “𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝘄𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲.” “𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲.” “𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗹.” “𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗭𝗬.” “𝗪𝗢𝗪.” If only we could capture the facial expressions that went with the words. @FSHPOfficial 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 wrapped up with a final couple of hours on the exhibit floor followed by one of the most effective formats we’ve seen at regional meetings: the 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗼. Think speed dating for healthcare solutions. Industry sits at the tables while pharmacy leaders rotate every four minutes. Four minutes to introduce a challenge, share a solution and determine whether there should be a next conversation. The room is always at capacity. The event sells out. And while there still isn’t enough time for every company to meet every provider, the conversations happen fast. For Codonics, those four minutes became especially interesting when we introduced 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺™ (𝗦𝗪𝗦). We’re sharing space with our partner @BD, which gave pharmacy leaders the opportunity to see Safe Label System® alongside the 𝗕𝗗 𝗣𝘆𝘅𝗶𝘀™ 𝗔𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and experience the combined value for medication safety, workflow and TJC compliance in anesthesia. Some of our first visitors were pharmacy customers excited about upcoming SLS installations who wanted to see firsthand what their OR teams will soon be using. We demonstrated Common Scan—where a single scan at SLS supports the cart decrement while SLS visually and audibly verifies the medication and prints the barcoded syringe label, without additional manual entry. Then came the question we heard again and again: “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀?” So we showed them 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺™ (𝗦𝗪𝗦). That’s when the conversations really took off. From seeing how SWS can help account for what was administered to learning how pharmaceutical spectrophotometer technology is being brought to the point of care for controlled substance waste, we heard more than a few: “𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲...𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁?” That reaction says a lot. The excitement around a connected perioperative medication safety platform—from 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 → 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 → 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 & 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻—is real. Even at a regional meeting like FSHP, the Codonics booth was two-deep at times today. There is one person very noticeably missing from FSHP this year: our Florida Senior Regional Account Manager, Greg Burrelli. Greg is unquestionably one of Codonics’ Florida MVPs, and it is very clear how much our customers, healthcare facilities, and partners value him.
