I’ve been getting pushback at coaching clinics when I say, “you can’t separate the skill from the decision”. Coaches clinging to linear progression: “drills” (for skills) -> live (once requisite skills are acquired). The skill is the decision which impacts how we teach.

“I need to work on my shot.” Whether in games or practice, this is a common lament of strikers(including myself) that I have heard over the years. As I’ve moved towards an Ecological approach in coaching, how I respond has shifted. Some thoughts: 🧵

Great quote from @benlyt on the importance of performance over results at youth level in sport Listen to his brilliant episode on The Sport Psych Show here: apple.co/2GEHQ3k

We have two brains and we generally only train one. We are half as good at soccer as we should be. My dad used to say "when you start thinking you hurt the ball club"

Set the environment and they will figure out the skill. Let them practice different ways. But ultimately just get out of the way. We did something similar it was called playing outside. We made up games, built bike ramps and ran through the woods. We learned stuff! #LTAD #play – at Clinton, MA

Knock out chase. The chaser can’t jump the obstacle, but the others can. Tight space. Good for puck protection, puck control and pretty much everything (except passing and shooting). A progression on the same tag game without pucks. #LinearPedagogy #Progressions

Works in every aspect of life, play simply knows better, that is, except in soccer coaching, where we simply can't leave a game to play.
Hey @JOYofthePEOPLE and @stu_arm: On free play, and how "Without understanding it's evolutionary function, it’s easy to underestimate children’s culture." We have slashed and burned the core features of childhood wapo.st/2ZazhEp?tid=ss_tw&ut…

Hockey needs to think of ways to promote fp with the restrictions of indoor ice. Floorball, rollerhockey, sectioning off a space for all day for when the scheduled training goes on around them. – at St Louis Park, MN
In fairness, hockey's challenge is ice time availability. Free play seems to work best in abundance- almost requirement. 110 minutes a week is what we generally have. I commit most of it to deliberate play as a coach (SAGs) , & have true "free play" with any extra ice we get.

The same problem applies here. "“The fact that we’ve made youth soccer in the U.S. more of a business than a grassroots sport is, I think, detrimental to the growth of the sport in the United States”" mercurynews.com/2019/07/24/e…

"FP does not mean play that lacks structure. Play is never a random activity, it always has structure. By unstructured we really mean structured by the players themselves rather than outside authority. Players are then free to modify their rules as they go along." -Peter Gray

Why can’t youth sports U12 & below be 4 mth seasons? Jan-Apr, May-Aug, Sept-Dec? Many sports seem to be “year-round” anyways. (The crazies will do 12 mths). For others ⬆️ opportunity for multi-sport. ⬇️ irrelevant “playoffs/championships”, ⬆️ festivals & opportunity to explore

The kids we are neglecting the most in the US are the current "top" youth players age 11-14. They are convinced the path they are on (winning therefore developing) is working, they can not be bothered with free play, they have a big tournament in Tampa, or Phoenix this weekend – at San José, Costa Rica

Much truth in this: wired.com/story/want-your-ki… Been trying to share this message for 10 years, but still see the mistakes being made.
It is so brilliant when the parents get what you are trying to do with long term development and giving everyone an opportunity. Even greater is the look on the face of a new parent to the club when you tell them there are no trials and we don't care if they are any "good".

I know I cite this organization frequently, but, when you read the details and manner in which they developed their model, it is hard not to want to apply a similar philosophy as a "coach". This is well worth the time to review. Thanks again @JOYofthePEOPLE for the insight!
Ever think free play is easy? Here is 10 years of our work, observation, theory, and science behind the model. My presentation I gave for the International Physical Literaracy conference in Winnipeg 05/2019
