A judge ruled in January that twenty million ChatGPT conversations had to be handed to the plaintiffs in a copyright case.
Not because anyone was hacked. Because discovery works like that, and because the court found that what you type into a chat box you disclosed voluntarily.
Enterprise and zero-retention plans were carved out. The twenty million are consumer chats, which is where most of us actually debug things.
Deleting a chat clears your sidebar. It doesn’t clear a retention window, a legal hold or a discovery sample. And you can’t rotate a key you never noticed pasting.
Be honest: if a key went into a chat box last month, would you know?
Email verified.
Token still valid.
Token never expires.
Attacker intercepts token once.
Uses it 1000 times.
Verifies 1000 accounts.
