The age of fossil fuel is coming to an end.
The rise of renewable energy is irreversible.
On Tuesday, I will outline the key action areas required to turbocharge a renewables revolution that can deliver clean & affordable energy for all.

📢 PUBLICATION ALERT!
In our @EnvSciTech article (pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs…), we elucidate the complex effects of oil and gas end-use activity emissions on #AirQuality in #EasternUS where intensive use of #oilandgas products and large emissions of biogenic #isoprene co-occur (1/2)

I'm deeply concerned about the recent push by 18 African nations to seek $5 billion for a new fossil fuel project lender.
This is a critical moment for our continent. We are at the centre of the ongoing climate crisis. Africa cannot continue to be a platform where fossil fuel interests are advanced, while African communities suffer

If we cant keep warming to 1.5C, we can simply 'overshoot'. 🌍🔥🌡️🏹
The idea goes as follows: we temporarily exceed 1.5C before returning below it at a later stage.
In a new paper @Nature we show how overconfidence in our discussions hides the deep risks of such strategy. /1

I condemn the broadening of the Middle East conflict with escalation after escalation.
This must stop.
We absolutely need a ceasefire.

Tripling renewables & doubling energy efficiency – goals set at COP28 – would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 10 billion tones by 2030 versus the current path
This would get the world 2/3 of the way to an energy system aligned with the Paris Agreement → iea.li/47U4bVF

How do we achieve the #COP28 goals of tripling renewables & doubling energy efficiency by 2030, and what does this mean for the next round of NDCs?
This is addressed in the @IEA's new report released at our 3rd High-Level Dialogue with @COP29_AZ: iea.li/3Y3azXy

Greenhouse gases are heating our planet, expanding seawater & melting ice.
I recently saw in the Pacific how rising seas result in coastal erosion & flooding, wrecking lives & economies.
Only drastic action to reduce emissions can limit sea level rise & keep people safe.

Instead of dialogue and diplomacy being deployed to end the nuclear threat, another nuclear arms race is taking shape.
We need to stop the madness before it’s too late.
The only way to eliminate the nuclear threat is to eliminate nuclear weapons.

The fossil fuel industry continues to pocket massive profits and subsidies.
Meanwhile, everyday people bear the costs of climate catastrophe – from rising insurance premiums to lost livelihoods.
Those who shoulder the blame must foot the bill.

This year’s #UNGA is a pivotal moment for building on the outcomes of #COP28 and advancing the global transition away from fossil fuels 📉

The state of our world is unsustainable due to impunity, inequality & uncertainty.
I told world leaders at #UNGA that we can’t go on like this.
The people of the world are looking to us.
Let them find us on the side of shared values & principles & on the right side of history.

On the 1st day of the 2024 @UN General Assembly, the Secretary-General @antonioguterres highlighted three important points on the climate crisis to Heads of State:
📌“A future without fossil fuels is certain. A fair and fast transition is not.” Countries’ next Nationally Determined Contributions, due in 2025, must bring national energy strategies, sustainable development priorities, and climate ambitions together. They must align with the 1.5 degree limit, cover the whole economy, and contribute to every one of the #COP28 energy transition targets.
📌Instead of continuing to reward polluters to wreck the planet, they must be held accountable. He called on the #G20 to lead on shifting money away from fossil fuel subsidies and investments to support a just energy transition; to put an effective price on carbon; and to implement solidarity levies on fossil fuel extraction through legally-binding, transparency mechanisms — all by next year.
📌The Secretary-General will be working with President Lula of Brazil to secure maximum ambition, acceleration, and cooperation between now and #COP30.

I strongly condemn Israel’s air strikes on an Israeli-designated zone for displaced people in Gaza.
Palestinians had moved to this area in search for shelter & safety, after being repeatedly instructed to do so by the Israeli authorities.
I repeat my call for an immediate ceasefire & the immediate & unconditional release of all hostages still held in Gaza.
