Rebel radio hero. That was a moment at Sonar!
John Peel was a singular agent of change and effortlessly contributed to shaping what pop music is today in ways few others ever did.
What truly blew me away was that he remained a staunchly uncompromising rebel and never gave up on his passionate support for those who he felt were deserving, no matter how obscure or controversial; he was of course proven right and his tasteful picks validated so many times that his detractors often had to STFU in humiliation.
But it seems that there were so few cut of his cloth. As such, he continues to be a crucially important inspiration to many of us selectors today, prodding us to remember our duty to embrace eclecticism and to stay open-minded to all music. Maximum respect. R.I.P.
(On the 20th anniversary of his untimely passing, here is a shot I took, deep in aural contemplation during his DJ set while at Sonar 2003 in Barcelona. I went on after him but was so mesmerized that I never worked up the nerve to introduce myself)

We hope everyone enjoyed the improvements to Hart Plaza at this year's festival; it was fun watching kids enjoying the cooling mists of the newly restored Dodge Fountain. Now this gathering place has been added to the National Registry of Historic Places! freep.com/story/news/local/m…
