Nine years since Grenfell.
@Keir_Starmer said its legacy would be one of the defining changes of his premiership.
That promise has not been kept.
Hundreds of thousands remain trapped in unsafe, unsellable homes.
We are asking for an urgent meeting.

Safe to say that Grenfell survivor Ed Daffarn is not overwhelmingly impressed with the current housing secretary:

⏳️ It's now nearly 11 months since @UKLabour promised funding for buildings under 11m.
The details have still not been published.
With every day that passes, more ordinary people face financial ruin.
Another broken promise.
Nearly 8 months since @UKLabour promised funding for buildings under 11m.
Details due last September. Still missing. ⏳
Meanwhile leaseholders in “low-rise” blocks are getting life-changing bills for problems they didn’t cause.
History repeating itself.
Change? What change?

I fear they’re mostly too late.

Existing leaseholders also trapped. Service charges at our @ballymore development in zone 5 west London for a 1 bed are circa £8k and for a 2 bed are circa £10.5k this year. Everyone is desperate to sell and escape but no one is buying an unlimited leasehold debt liability.

Unlikely. Sadly, Labour's focus seems to be on protecting the taxpayer, then industry and then maybe leaseholders.
Nothing has changed.

It's worth thinking about the consequences of this for the housing ladder.
Whereas previous generations could ride the equity train, young flat owners wanting to move somewhere bigger basically have to start again saving for another deposit

Yes, the awful impact of the building safety crisis on the lives of ordinary people cannot be underestimated.
But let’s be clear: the blame also lies with successive governments - first for helping cause this crisis, then for failing to deliver a fair, comprehensive solution.
Thousands of people across Stratford and Bow are suffering the consequences of the building safety crisis, through no fault of their own. The distress and impact to their lives cannot be underestimated.
The blame lies with bad developers and negligent landlords, who have acted with impunity for years.
Not anymore. This Labour Government is coming for you.

Delicious to see this. The government’s failure to deliver on a key manifesto promise to end leasehold for good is now hitting developers in the pocket. Buyers, including overseas investors, have wised up and refuse to become debt slaves to freeholders. dailymail.com/money/mortgage…

Do I have any followers trapped in leasehold flats who would like to share their story with a national newspaper?

Went for a beer with a visitor tonight. She pays £15 per day in leasehold charges on her small flat. £15 per day. In Manchester. Can’t afford the charge, can’t sell the flat because of it.
Madness.

The flat being raffled is in a high-rise, has a short lease and a service charge over 5k pa, so it's unsellable, just like thousands of similar flats across London.

Reading terrible stories like this and thinking of the many we don't hear about. There are fire sales happening all over the country as a direct consequence of both the previous and current governments making victims of the building safety crisis pay. Shameful.

Today we met with @SamanthaDixonMP ahead of tomorrow’s King’s Speech.
The Remediation Bill is simply too little, too late. It won't make homes safe, protect leaseholders or speed up remediation any time soon.
Labour is still failing to get a grip on the building safety crisis.

.@SteveReedMP that's what we were telling you to do ever since you became the Housing Secretary.
But you refused to listen, put on a silly hat & backed rogue builders while ignoring their innocent #leaseholder victims.

Leasehold is a system of upper-class corruption that keeps the people down, and which Parliament has talked about abolishing since the 1880s.

Send Labour a message that their lies to leaseholders will not be tolerated by voting them out in local elections.
