I've campaigned with a lot of candidates this year, but only Jamie Ager had me out shooting skeet and moving cows around his farm. Western North Carolina - and our whole country - will be better off with him in Congress. Congratulations, Jamie!

"New records obtained by KARE 11 show the company that owned a vacant private prison in Appleton, Minnesota offered to sell it to the state in 2025 for $75 million.
One year later, the Trump administration agreed to use taxpayer funds to buy the same abandoned prison from CoreCivic, Inc., for $495.6 million.
The price difference, $420 million, is more than taxpayers are estimated to have lost in Minnesota’s much-publicized Feeding Our Future fraud scandal." kare11.com/article/news/inve…

There's one big under-discussed element of North Carolina lawmakers suspending the state gas tax: the finances are wildly irresponsible.
Yesterday, Republican lawmakers in North Carolina's state legislature called a special session to *temporarily* suspend the state gas tax, which is 41 cents/gallon. Their suspension will only go through the end of November. (Very subtle, guys.)
Suspending North Carolina's gas tax for 45 days will cost the state about $360 million. The gas tax is normally how the State of North Carolina funds repair and maintenance of its roadways, so... we've still gotta do that. So according to Republican Senate Leader Phil Berger, they will tap the state's Inflationary Reserve Fund, which has $518 million in it, to replace the funds lost.
That's about 70% of the entire reserve fund.
But obviously, a 45-day suspension will do nothing permanent for gas prices. It'll just dip them a little - right at election season. That's what these lawmakers are dumping 70% of the Inflationary Reserve Fund for.
And the worst part? It likely won't even bring down prices as much as it sounds. Gas stations are free to charge whatever they like. They can just cut the per-gallon price 10 or 20 cents, so it looks nice, and pocket the rest as pure profit.
The reason everyone's gas prices are high is because Trump launched a war against Iran, in which 19 American service members have been killed (so far) and 861 wounded, according to the Pentagon. A one-time tax gimmick does nothing to address the real problem - it's just using NC taxpayer money for a political stunt most people can see right through.
Yeah, good luck with that.

Disastrous interview for Jennifer Balkcom, the GOP nominee for #NC11. Asked whether scandal-plagued Rep. Chuck Edwards should resign:
Balkcom paused for 14s: "I'm not sure… he messed up… that's kind of where I'd leave it."
Reporter: "So you're on the fence."
Balkcom: "Yes."

There are a lot of people who truly and sincerely believe the (heavily disputed) claim from @whatleync that former Governor Cooper was somehow involved in releasing thousands of violent criminals into the public.
So you might ask: if really were true, wouldn't Republicans in the state legislature - who loathe Cooper - be chomping at the bit to uncover The Truth and make it all public?
Probably. And yet, the special committee Republican leaders formed to investigate and "hold accountable" former Governor Cooper over the 2021 prison settlement has done... nothing.
In July, the committee co-chair, Republican Majority Leader @brendenjonesnc - hardly a Cooper fan - scheduled and then quickly canceled a meeting with the leaders of the Department of Adult Corrections. But besides that, the committee has not even met once.
Why? Because if the committee met and heard evidence, it would publicly vindicate Roy Cooper and demolish the Whatley campaign's central claim.
Every credible news outlet in North Carolina has unanimously rejected the claim as absurd. It's pure fiction. Of course, political campaigns are allowed to peddle fiction, and lying in politics is hardly new.
But because it's fiction, having a legislative committee publicly investigating the claim would be very unhelpful to Whatley's campaign - so they've put it on ice.

Come up with better lies.
Since Robert Kraft is in the news, this is a good time to remind you what he did.
In 2019, he went twice in two days to a massage parlor in Jupiter, FL.
The first time he got a handjob.
The second time he got a blowjob.
Cops were already suspicious of the place so they had cameras that caught it all.
BUT...
Bob is a billionaire. So he hired the best lawyers money could buy for "high 6 to low 7 figures" and they found a judge who ruled the cameras violated the law and tossed everything out.
Bob walked.
The women did not. They were arrested and charged with prostitution.
So in short.. fuck that guy and his holier than thou moral charade.

The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest. Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel. To be clear, my views come from my own political convictions and should never be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, for whom I have deep love and respect. Everything I know about acting, activism, and humanism has been profoundly shaped by the Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones who have been integral and family throughout every point of my life.
This merger has real consequences for real people, and for the entire country. Scrutinizing the Ellisons, including Oracle’s business built on data, surveillance technology and government contracts, and the serious threat to editorial freedom and the loss of a livelihood for thousands of families, is fair and necessary. The $111 billion deal would hand one family control over CNN, HBO and Warner Bros., backed in part by foreign money whose influence on editorial decisions has never been fully explained to the public.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for serious national security review, and regulators still haven’t given the public a real answer. Until they do, the merger shouldn’t move forward. Now is the time to dive boldly into all these issues, not step back or concede.

Josh Hokit responds to the backlash surrounding his comments about Michelle Obama at the White House:
"I thought I was giving her a compliment. I don't think anyone viewed it as Michelle Obama being a man. It's more like she knows how to deal with adversity, she knows how to work hard like a man when the times get tough.
It was a perfect opportunity to show the world how great this country is with freedom of speech... In other parts of the world, you say something like that and you die.
That's one thing about my career... You'll never hear me backtrack from what I say."
