Preparedness doesn't begin when an outbreak starts. The 2026 Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak offers an important reminder of why research systems, financing, clinical trial capacity and partnerships must be built before they are needed. The latest Lassa Lens Initiative Newsletter explores what this means for epidemic preparedness in West Africa, and how the Lassa Fever Coalition is helping build regional readiness. Artificial intelligence can help public health experts identify potential disease outbreaks, analyse complex medical data and explore possible treatments. But how do we ensure that these tools support good decisions rather than replace the human judgement needed to make them? At #WHS2026 in Berlin, a panel discussion on preparing future public health leaders explored why technical knowledge alone is not enough. Our latest dispatch looks at why human judgement remains essential as #AI becomes more integrated into public health, and why stronger health systems are needed to turn information into responsible action. The Ministry of Health has confirmed one additional case of Ebola (Bundibugyo Virus Disease), bringing the total to nine, including the first case, who died. All cases belong to one cluster, with no evidence of transmission beyond the group. Eight patients are receiving treatment and are reported to be stable and improving. Meanwhile, 134 of 135 identified contacts have been traced and quarantined, while contacts who entered quarantine on October 6 are expected to begin returning home from October 25 after completing 21 days without symptoms. It was a pleasure to moderate the fireside chat “Sovereign by Design: Africa’s Choice on Health Data and AI” at the Articifial Intelligence in Health Summit 2026 organised by @ahfidng, with Jean Philbert Nsengimana (@nsengimanajp) and Prof Annie Hartley (LiGHT) Who controls our health data? Who determines its use? What will African institutions pay to access the technologies they depend on? Data sovereignty extends beyond storage. Ownership, governance, skills and technical capacity shape Africa’s ability to influence these technologies. We discussed gaps across the continent, promising tools including #MOVE, and the need to unite our data and strengthen collaboration. I also contributed to a discussion on responsible AI use in healthcare. As people seek medical advice from AI, safeguards, public awareness, regulation and accountability matter. Africa must have the capacity and agency to shape how health data and AI improve health outcomes. Thank you to the AI in Health Summit for these important discussions. #AIinHealth #HealthData #DataSovereignty #DigitalHealth #AIinHealthSummit2026 @nighealthwatch @dsn_ai_network

Replying to @NigeriaGov
@NigeriaGov has confirmed a case of Ebola in the FCT, in a patient who recently arrived in Abuja from Uganda. The patient is in isolation and receiving medical care. Contact tracing has begun, with 44 close contacts identified. @Fmohnigeria urges Nigerians not to panic, but to stay vigilant, practise hand hygiene and report any suspected case or exposure to @NCDCgov on 6232. If you have symptoms, call before visiting a facility. Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of someone who is sick with or has died from the disease, or through contaminated materials. #Ebola #EbolaNigeria
