Hey I'm Noah, I'm building Shift - a primitive form of quantum money.
Shift started with an idea I couldn't let go of.
I stumbled across something called quantum money late one night and spent the next few hours reading everything I could find about it. The core idea is almost absurdly simple: what if you could make double-spending in the context of digital money physically impossible, not by building a better system, but by using the laws of nature to enforce it?
If money exists as a quantum object in a random state, the no-cloning theorem means copying it is not just difficult but impossible by the laws of Physics. You hand it to someone, they receive it, and both of you know with certainty that no copy exists. No central authority, no consensus mechanism, no trust assumptions. Just physics.
The problem is that actually building this is nowhere near possible today. Quantum objects are fragile. Keeping one stable long enough to be useful is hard. Transporting it across any meaningful distance is harder. The physics is sound but the engineering is decades away, maybe more.
So I started thinking about what you do when you can't build the real thing. If the properties of quantum money are what make it valuable, could you get those same properties from something else? Something you could actually build today?
That question is where Shift came from. If we can't build quantum money today, how about we simulate it somehow? Now I believe I've an answer.

The Zcash Orchard exploit is bigger than Zcash.
This isn't a Zcash-specific problem.
In any ZK privacy system, the same property that makes transactions private also makes counterfeiting undetectable if the proof breaks.
The math alone can't be your only line of defense. Hardware that enforces the same rules closes the gap.
