8 years ago when I came out my mom told me I was no longer her son. Today she got my gay little brother a rainbow ornament for Christmas. Just goes to show you that sometimes it’s not your sexuality that your parents don’t like, just you. Merry Christmas.

The Iran War obviously drove a lot of political problems for Trump, but JD Vance's view that it's the ONLY source of trouble — no tariffs, no corruption, no immigration overreach — is absurd.
slowboring.com/p/its-so-over…
Vance's point that this was a foreign policy election is hardly a revelation -- it didn't take a political scientist to see this coming. But it's still jarring that the VP is playing pundit on issues of war and peace -- and their dire consequences for Americans' security, prosperity, and future. He's dropping any pretense that our leaders should be focused on Americans' wellbeing rather than their own political prospects.
One of the things the data analysts on our side obsessed over was "composition"—whether the electorate looked close enough to 2024 for Republicans to win. And despite polls that showed a Democrat blowout, the data kept on telling us the same story: in some states turnout was merely OK, in other states it was downright amazing, and in no state was it catastrophic. There was a genuine sense of optimism on our team: our people were showing up.
So, I asked the smartest data guy I know, does that mean we're going to shock the world? "No," he told me. "We might do better than the polls suggest. But the data is telling us that a lot of Trump/Vance 2024 voters are pissed and planning to vote for the other guys. Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us."
Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026.
There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true.
But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone.
Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were:
1) End the war
2) Focus on cost of living/inflation
3) Put America First
4) Change our relationship to Israel
Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results. While many spent Monday attacking Rachel Campos Duffy for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, it turns out her political advice was sound. (She’s also a great person.)
In the next few months, there's going to be a lot of gaslighting. Expect to hear any number of establishment politicians say the solution to our woes is amnesty. I'm open to the idea that we should change enforcement—by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor, for instance. But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you.
The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night.
If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest.
But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there.
I remain hopeful about our country. To the people who are pissed off and want to say, “I told you so”: you’re right, you did tell us so. Take that energy into electing Republicans who share your worldview. To the people who are just pissed at the results, you should be. Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country.

Fun Fact: More women have credibly accused Donald Trump of sexual assault than non-citizens have voted in federal elections
Chase Baxter retweeted
Incredible. First @SecMullinDHS claimed that @DHSgov identified 15,903 noncitizens on Nevada’s voter roll. Then DHS officials said, no no no, that’s just people we flagged, here’s the names of 185 people we KNOW aren’t citizens.
All 185 were citizens. DHS got 100% wrong.
From 16,000 to 185 to Zero: Trump’s Claims of Illegal Voting in Nevada Fizzle.

He previously signed a letter stating that he would never vote for a bill that did this. And he caved. He's chosen Trump over Tucson. He's spineless and a sorry excuse for a representative. It's no wonder he's afraid to show his face in his own district.

In voting for this bill, @repciscomani @JuanCiscomani has voted to cut his constituents' health care, handicap clean energy factories creating jobs, give TEMPORARY, tiny tax cuts to the poorest, and enshrine massive, PERMANENT tax cuts for the richest. He has sold Tucson out.

ICE deported a man who was 100% in the country with permission from the US government, who was on a certain path to a green card through his wife's pending U visa, whose son is a former Marine and whose daughter is married to a Marine.
This is what mass deportation looks like.
Chase Baxter retweeted
This is insane. ICE is deporting people to countries they’re not from solely as a way to send a message to completely different people; a form of collective punishment.
The Trump administration spits on human rights every day.

CRAZY story.
- Immigration judge grants man "voluntary departure," saying he must leave by June 11.
- Man buys plane ticket for June 10, asks ICE to release him so he can board. ICE says no. He misses the plane.
- ICE says he has a deportation order because he failed to depart.
Here's a new one: ICE *prevented* a man from self-deporting by a June 11 deadline — he asked ICE to let him leave and had a one-way plane ticket for June 10.
Then ICE re-detained him because he missed the deadline. Due process violation, judge rules. storage.courtlistener.com/re…

This is horrific. A U.S. citizen describes the facility her husband was brought to while he waited for a deportation flight. Dozens of people crammed into tiny cells, a "chain of people vomiting" from filthy toilets, no medical care, and only one meal per day.
It's unacceptable.
ICE is creating a humanitarian crisis in our own backyard.
Feeding people one meal a day that makes them sick, overcrowding holding cells, denying medical treatment — they are denying people basic human dignity.

I just conducted an unprompted, late night oversight visit at an ICE holding facility at the Mesa Gateway Airport with @RepGregStanton and @Rep_Grijalva. What we saw was shocking and sick.
Well over 240 detainees stacked like sardines in cells. People were sick and ICE was refusing medical care.

Wildfire season is weeks away.
The West is in record drought.
And the Trump administration just announced it is shutting down 57 of the 77 Forest Service research stations that tell us how bad it is going to get and what to do about it.
We already know how this ends.
When Trump moved the Bureau of Land Management out of Washington in his first term, 87 percent of the staff quit rather than relocate. The same thing is happening here. Scientists are not going to uproot their families and abandon university partnerships. They are going to leave.
And when they leave, decades of data, research, and institutional knowledge walk out the door with them.
The Forest Service oversees 193 million acres. It lost nearly 6,000 employees to DOGE cuts in just the first half of last year. Now it is gutting the research operation that tells land managers what is actually happening to those forests in real time.
California alone is losing six research facilities, right before fire season.
There is no version of this that makes the forests safer, the science stronger, or the taxpayer better off.
