‘I feel justice wasn’t done on my case and it was heard some years ago’ #InternationalWomensDay2025 Nora Whelan (1896–1983) was born in Kilnafrehan, Co. Waterford, at 18 she worked as a domestic servant in Dan Fraher’s home, a hub of revolutionary activity. Before the 1916 Rising, she supported the Volunteers, kept watch for Harry Boland and hid weapons. After the Rising, her involvement intensified as the Fraher home remained a key meeting place for the IRA, despite constant raids, and even sheltered Margaret Pearse following her sons executions. Nora applied for a military service pension, but her application - like many Waterford women was unsuccessful. Many years later in December, 1950, she wrote a letter to the pension board requesting her case for a service pension is re-opened. In her letter she said, ‘I feel justice wasn’t done on my case and it was heard some years ago’. Nora Whelan was never granted a well earned service pension for service from 1916 - 1923, despite her appeals but was successful in her application for a military medal. In later years she lived and worked in Dublin but eventually returned to her home in Kilnafrehan. She died aged 97 years on the 16th July 1983 at St Joseph’s Hospital, Dungarvan and was laid to rest in Kilgobnet graveyard.
