Unified Diagnostic Services (UDS) is used by a majority of manufacturers as their diagnostics protocol. These SIDs (Service IDentifiers) are an interface to get or send requests to individual ECUs. Not all services will be supported on any individual ECU.(automotivedose.blogspot.com/…)

Each controller will have different levels of support for certain services (function). There are some cool tools to help with this. Check out our github (github.com/CanBusHack/cmap) and find CMAP a frame-work to get you started on scanning UDS.

Vehicles in the US and many other countries employ a method of extracting information from controllers (thus sensors). This is often done with Diagnostics. Diagnostics are a set of protocols, services (functions), and parameters (Identifiers) to perform many unique tasks.

Once you have a grasp on ISO TP (CAN-TP), understanding higher level protocols such as UDS (ISO 14229), KWP-2K (ISO 14230) or GMLAN (GMW 3110) will allow you to access a lot of manufacture data and functions. The most common for modern vehicles (2015 and new is UDS).

Some data can only be received via diagnostic requests. Other functions are also available such as reading memory, resetting, reflashing, enabling outputs (motor/light control), and re-provisioning features of controllers (ECUs).

Diagnostics are a great way to interface with multiple vehicles from the same manufacturer. However there are limitations. Each manufacturer implements their own parameter IDs and sometimes their own protocol. Since you are requesting data from controllers, delays in data occur.
