When a crystal is placed near a magnet, its electrons can only have certain amounts of energy. When this phenomenon is graphed, fractal patterns called Cantor sets emerge. quantamagazine.org/ten-marti…

Already lots of qrts about how the ancients had spreadsheets too but it really needs to be emphasized that their sheets look *exactly* like ours

Unassuming p. chem and mat sci labs at Nowhere State University are hard-carrying the US's technology strategy.

We have two identical groups of 8 gauges with anomalous gauge at position (3,1). The degree of anomaly is identical in both groups ~ 8 deg. Humans have extreme hyperacuity with respect to detecting angular orientation of line segments—needle gauge is so much faster to read. The arc gauges all look the same even though the amount of deviation is the same, about 8 degrees. Even if you concentrate, it's hard to tell which one is off.

Learned that when I saw my lab's old glassware in a buddy's milk crate. Turns out the previous chemist had been running a small moonshining op and some of the inventory had ended up in the hands of a select few vagabonds (my buddy) near campus.

2 MegaPower units running open air Brayton cycle for a total of 4 MWe or 2 MWe + 2 on standby. Depending on ISRU demands, tapping off process heat to run high temp reactions (HTSE for Sabatier) could make other designs more attractive. patents.google.com/patent/US…
Nuclear bros: your challenge is to install a reactor into a Starship to operate on Mars as a power plant. Continuous operation, electrical output, 100 T max mass, 9 m diameter. You can deploy stuff from the Starship onto the ground but there's no subsurface lake of cold water to drill into. Reply with a rough estimate of power output and conceptual design. Remember, reactors and rockets are expensive so we want to maximize power output.

.@CJHandmer have you given much thought on direct thermal tapoff vs just blasting shit with microwaves for ISRU? I imagine combined heat & power is heavy and hard to maintain and I'm guessing you need to be using a lot of heat to justify the complexity.

The flip side of this: Bob has patiently explained paraconsistent logic to me on 3 different occasions under varying degrees of sobriety, and my empiricism-poisoned brain still doesn't understand. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Para…
One time, drunk as a skunk, I forced .@bug_bomber to explain exactly what "ray tracing" is in excruciating detail until I finally understood it. In that moment, it was far more difficult to grasp than wild heterodox formal logic.

My favorite Bob algorithm is the Primorial Class Attendance Function. The product of the first n primes $$P_n\#$$ scales super exponentially which makes Excel grumpy. Sadly for Bob's students, he will have to mark them all absent until Excel has arbitrary precision integers.
If some of the more tech & coding oriented among you were to see my early Twitter bot scripts (terrible, convoluted, uneconomic, labyrinthine, IF-THEN chains), you’d get sick to your stomach
