Chairwoman Nita Lowey built a brighter, more hopeful future — for her beloved New York constituents and for all Americans. I traveled the world with Nita for years and saw the esteem in which she was held by heads of state and women and girls. She was beloved.

After hearing that some orgs are getting reversal notices of program terminations, some are now getting RECALLS of those reversals. One organization got a stop work order, then a waiver, then a termination, then a termination reversal, then a note that the reversal was in error.

Make a huge mistake. Then make a false claim about how you fixed it. They did it for PEPFAR. Now Ebola. I follow this particular topic VERY closely, so here's what really happened and why this isn't true AT ALL...🧵
Elon Musk: "We will make mistakes. We won't be perfect ... so for example, with USAID, one of the things we accidentally canceled very briefly was ebola prevention."

“What we have now is this insane Elon Musk-led mafia takeover, where patriotic American citizens who work for USAID in some of the most dangerous places in the world are being stripped of their job and insulted by the president of the United States, while we’re shooting ourselves in the foot, from a geostrategic point of view.” Former USAID deputy leader James Kunder – a Republican political appointee – is scathing about the Trump administration’s attempted dismantling of the agency. “I guarantee you they are celebrating… in Beijing right now.”

NEW: On CNN we played numerous examples of Rubio praising foreign aid/USAID as vital to American interests. We also revealed a letter he wrote to Biden in 2022 suggesting USAID's budget needed to be increased to counter Chinese Community Party influence around the globe. Rubio is now echoing criticisms he once rejected.

This thread. And since we all have such short memories, read about the last time we had ONE case of Ebola in the U.S. It endangers Americans when we disengage. nytimes.com/2014/10/24/nyreg….
There is an Ebola outbreak in Uganda There are two red flags here The index case is a healthcare worker Its happening in Kampala, a city of nearly 2 million people Here's what the USG should be doing right now to ensure Ebola is contained in Uganda and doesn't spread 🧵

What is the impact of @PEPFAR funding being stopped? @BUCEID faculty @brookenichols & colleagues built a live tracker on the estimated real time & long-term impact on premature deaths associated with this funding gap. Each number is a human being. pepfarimpact.vercel.app

Specifics here from @Atul_Gawande on the damage done here. Bottom line: people will die, alliances will be shredded, and the US will be less safe.
I ran @USAID health programs for the last 3 years. Trump’s 90 day Stop Work Order on foreign assistance does serious damage to the world and the US. Examples:🧵

This is *catastrophic.* Lifesaving programs will stop, we'll lose valuable staff expertise, and the bureacratic chaos will be epic. Worst of all: we'll renege on our commitments. Shock and awe like this might be good for a sound bite, but it's bad geopolitics.
As written, this doesn't just apply to new obligations or disbursements, as the EO instructs - it applies to EXISTING awards. This is a much bigger impact, stopping existing efforts (including services) that are being provided in the field.

Nevermind the dog whistle. Trump’s spelling it out with a megaphone.

The vulnerabilities in US pandemic preparedness & response are structural

Talking to delegates it strikes me how many LMICs are *only* interested in the #PandemicTreaty if it solves the access to medical countermeasures problem. For real. HIC negotiators either seem to not understand this or they just don’t care. Institutionalist thinking 🤔
