Public health interventions around infectious diseases often rely on models estimating the number of social contacts. However, most models don't account for behavior change when people are sick. Researchers at CEID sought to develop more realistic models of patient behavior.
By surveying patients with acute respiratory infection or acute gastroenteritis, new CEID research found that cases substantially reduced social contacts during peak illness, then returned to a 2-fold increase after recovery.
