Turns out you can build a high performance, vectorized query engine (development underway) where data self-organizes around its types instead of externally defined schemas. We call this super-structured data. zed.brimdata.io/docs/formats

In Zed, this query isn't so deceptively complex as the eval order is explicit in the dataflow...

Working on a new preview & load feature in Zui. This is soon what you will see when you drag a data file into the app.

Zui is known in the security community for it’s PCAP parsing and conversion to Zeek and Suricata logs. I started using Zui recently for non-PCAP data. It’s robust and definitely will be soon my personal preference if I can do visualization with it, you should try it.

Clever! Here's the same trick with zq and ZSON output. A little more intuitive and you get real data types...

Look at the releases in that array! No table format needed for that select view on @observablehq.
Brim Data retweeted
Data doesn't always need to fit in a table.
With Zed, it's easy to just grab an array of strings. This can be given directly to a select input for instance.

The Table View in Zui is getting a big upgrade soon. One cool feature is the ability to expand and collapse headers. Take a look!

github.com/brimdata/zui-insi… 👀🔥 - imo the best way to quickly explore and analyze data, specifically json. No mucking around with dicts, no googling jq recipes, no setup of an overblown tech stack. Just drag-drop and query

There is a lot of interesting thinking baked into Zed (zed.brimdata.io/) which echoes a number of XTDB's design decisions. @SteveMcCanne gives an accessible and intuitive summary of Zed and ZSON in this keynote:

MISSING should be an error not a variation of NULL and errors should be first-class, wrap-able, and embeddable anywhere a value can go. IMHO the Zed language gets this right... zed.brimdata.io/docs/languag…
