Germany's discourse around Israel is so broken that it silences Jews in the name of fighting antisemitism.
I wrote for @jacobin about how Germany's rhetoric of atonement is being used to bash immigrants- strengthening the right and endangering Jews in DE.

Tobias Rausch, the AfD candidate, has just been elected president of the parliament of Saxony-Anhalt - the first far-right figure to hold such a post in the history of the federal republic.
Voting figures suggest he may have won some votes from CDU members, as well as AfD/BSW.

$60 Austrian rye bread loaves and Lidl going for viral advertising in lower manhattan. Germanic culture clearly having a moment, maybe baked goods will magically save the German economy?
Shoutout to Lidl for pulling up to the $60 rye loaf bakery with a truck full of $0.49 croissants and hiring a bunch of influencers to promote it instagram.com/reel/DdjnSNiB6…
First time voting in Germany after living here for twelve years. Feels pretty good!
One note - ‘I voted’ stickers would probably save german democracy, a bit anticlimactic not to be able to smugly show off post voting
I’ve written about how Berlin’s upcoming election is shaped by its housing crisis, and whether or not the city implements a radical referendum to socialize housing owned by corporate landlords could be a deciding factor in building coalitions, for @CourthouseNews
A controversial referendum to seize property from "megalandlords" is dividing parties as the German capital prepares for highly competitive state elections. @braneck courthousenews.com/weary-ber…
If the CDU don't clear the 5% hurdle to make it into the Meck-Pomm state parliament does Merz have to step down? Or will he just be a bit louder when he calls Germans lazy?

Berlin’s been raided for suspected corruption. Running against that, a super unpopular ruling CDU, the greens and a bunch of Nazis. Easiest election for die Linke ever?? Should be polling at 30% before this anyway tbh given the field

Ever more footballers are pressuring FIFA chief Gianni Infantino to resign after he plotted to sell off the World Cup.
Removing him should be the first step in a root-and-branch reform to put the game back in the hands of players and ordinary fans. jacobin.com/2026/08/football…

‘Travel sports,’ a term that has come to encompass all sorts of private teams, leagues, and clubs, used to be for the truly exceptional young athlete. Now, they’re for anyone willing to pay — an expensive, exhausting commitment that has become popular not necessarily because millions of parents want them for their children but because it can feel like there’s no other choice. Rec programs are underfunded and struggle to compete with for-profit leagues for prime field, rink, and court times. And the level of play is diluted, often very early, as travel teams are incentivized to enroll children at young ages.
Around 5 million children in the U.S. now compete on travel teams. Parents find themselves trapped. They know the benefits of sports and want that for their children, yet giving it to them often means buying into a sports ecosystem that’s inherently flawed. As the pay-to-play model increasingly takes hold, so does the idea that kids should start competing at younger and younger ages, risking their sense of self along with their shoulders and ACLs.
“I never want my kids to look back and say I didn’t do everything I could to help them live their dreams,” a mother of three soccer players said. She’s hired professional photographers to take action shots for her 12- and 13-year-olds’ Instagram accounts — the platform has become a recruiting tool — and they’ve both asked her to pay for personal trainers.
“I think the word isn’t ‘specialize’; you are ‘professionalizing’ your kid early. You are exposing them to everything professionals have to deal with — I’m talking injury, time, schedule, everything,” said John Van Benschoten, a former MLB player and travel-baseball coach.
It makes one ask: All this for what? And for whom? Read Caitlin Moscatello’s cover story on how travel leagues have made youth sports more expensive, hypercompetitive, and all-consuming — and the investors who are making a killing: nymag.visitlink.me/1-gbZQ
