Destruction of East India Company Gives US Lawmakers a Blueprint for Confronting Big Tech. The instruments to take apart entrenched corporate power “still exist,” but current governments are “lacking... the political nerve to use them,” said historian William Dalrymple

In fact, in many areas where technooptimists argue that AI is going to revolutionize everything, the impact may be much less positive because current approaches are not helping us get to the bottom of mechanisms of human cognition, discovery, and innovation. In many of them, we need more and higher quality data to make further advance, and what makes AI very competent in coding and writing doesn’t generalize. Worse, in a few of them, AI enthusiasm may push research and investment in the wrong direction.

Dear followers
This is a truly brilliant article by Henry Farrell. Not because it defends me against the Economist (I have moved on). It’s the way Farrell frames and analyzes the issues surrounding technooptimism and AI. The Acemoglu Wars Are All About AI. programmablemutter.com/p/the…

One of the upshots of the Economist’s attack on Daron Acemoglu is that the key dividing line is not about methodology. You can literally be the most decorated mainstream economist but if you land on the “wrong” side, you are ousted.
The key dividing line is whose side you are on: workers or big business.
Daron Acemoglu, who won the Nobel Prize in 2024, is no heterodox economist.
But now The Economist magazine has damned his work, because it challenges the untrammeled power of Big Tech elites. jacobin.com/2026/08/acemoglu…

I am not happy about the Economist’s article, which feels like a hit piece. There is also a background to it, which is more troubling (as I will share at some point). I asked them to allow me to respond. I am waiting for their answer. If not in the magazine, I will share my response here.
