H/t to @C_Barraud, who flagged ahead of the euro area GDP release that he was looking for a GDP beat. And beat it did: GDP grew 0.4% in the third quarter, double the 0.2% Bloomberg consensus (prior 0.6%), and 1.3% year-over-year versus 1.1% expected, per Reuters. The headline flatters, though. Bloomberg Economics estimates Ireland (+5.5%, driven again by multinationals) accounted for about half the increase, with the four largest economies averaging just 0.1%: ▪️ Spain +0.6% ▪️ Netherlands +0.6% ▪️ Germany +0.2% ▪️ Italy 0.0% ▪️ France -0.1% But it's France which is the real problem here. The contraction missed the 0.1% consensus and was its second this year (-0.2% in the first quarter, flat in the second), so the French economy has not grown at all in 2026. Investment fell 0.6%, and net exports subtracted 0.6 percentage points, more than offsetting a 0.4% gain in household consumption, per Insee. That’s a real problem for France’s debt math. Public debt hit 119.0% of GDP at the end of the second quarter, up from 115.6% a year earlier (Insee), with the deficit running at 5.4% of GDP. The government’s 0.5% growth forecast for 2026 is now out of reach (Insee puts the carryover at just 0.2%), which makes its 5.0% deficit target for 2027 that much harder to hit, assuming the budget even gets through parliament. Meanwhile, the 10-year OAT sits near 4.9%, roughly 155 to 160 basis points over Bunds, near the widest since the 2011-12 euro crisis. With zero real growth and marginal borrowing costs that high, the interest bill is projected to climb to about €91 billion in 2027 from about €79 billion this year. Stagnation shrinks the tax base a recovery depends on, and with the ECB eyeing a third hike in December and in the midst of a leadership change and French presidential elections in 2027 where the far right leads polls, relief isn’t likely coming from Frankfurt or Paris anytime soon.

A breakthrough has reportedly been reached in indirect negotiations between the US and Iran, with an American delegation expected to join Iranian officials for direct talks in Doha, according to the Qatari newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed. Citing sources close to mediation efforts led by Qatar and Pakistan, the report says the sides have agreed on preliminary measures concerning Iran’s nuclear program, navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and financial incentives for Tehran, with China and Russia set to serve as guarantors of an agreement. timesofisrael.com/liveblog_e…

🇫🇷 #France | According to recent prediction market data from Kalshi and Polymarket, the outlook for the next French presidential election is experiencing notable shifts. 📈 Powered by strong positive momentum—including a widely noticed recent media interview, David Lisnard is riding a strong upward trend, climbing to 17%-19% in the markets. He has now overtaken Édouard Philippe, who has seen a gradual decline down to 12%-15% across both platforms. 📊 Marine Le Pen continues to lead the prediction markets by a wide margin, currently sitting at 41%-44%. Following a massive surge throughout the summer and early autumn, her odds have recently leveled off slightly from their late-September peak, entering a period of consolidation. 📊 Jean-Luc Mélenchon currently sits in fourth place but with Philippe on a downward trend, he is within striking distance of reclaiming the third spot. xitter.cf/C_Barraud/status/21157…
🇫🇷 #France | Prediction markets point to a changing presidential race ⚠️ 1️⃣ David Lisnard is gaining momentum. He has caught up with Édouard Philippe on Kalshi and is narrowing the gap on Polymarket. His rising social-media following and the surge in reported Nouvelle Énergie membership reinforce the sense of growing momentum. 2️⃣ Marine Le Pen remains the frontrunner, but has lost some ground recently. 3️⃣ Jean-Luc Mélenchon remains in fourth place, trailing the three leading contenders on both platforms. ➡️ The key question: can Lisnard turn his online momentum and growing party membership into broader electoral support? xitter.cf/LoupePolitique/status/…
