“Given all the ways that Americans of all races manage to obtain illicit mood-altering substances of all kinds, we should anticipate the emergence of an underground market in menthol cigarettes. “ washingtonpost.com/opinions/…
So many good memories of Steve. My favorite is when he, @Montel_Williams and I met with DC Rep Eleanor Holmes Norton about medical marijuana. She kept telling Montel that marijuana activists were lying to him about marijuana. Wouldn’t look at Steve or me at all....1/3

Rep Norton would later become a major supporter of marijuana reform. So like I always say, never give up on your elected officials. 2/3

Durbin has been an effective advocate for criminal justice issues. It would be great for him to get this leadership post.

Whenever I hear police or politicians cry over the cut funding movement I think of things like this. Police have more than enough money. They just waste it. apple.news/A29_Gt-IxSh61U0fl…
Joe Biden, still an opponent of reform. It’s in his DNA.
THREAD: Biden has had a long love affair with police unions. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he’s now admitted he won't end qualified immunity if elected president.
His record on criminal justice is terrible. Let’s review.

I get that everything - and I mean everything - has become a political football...
But it still makes no sense to me that things like revoking qualified immunity and investigating police budgets are seen as "radical leftist" ideas
These should be ideas conservatives understand

Hi folks. With a few exceptions I’ve been away from twitter for a year or so. Coming back because the national conversation on police reform is a dream come true. I have a few thoughts I would like to throw out there.
Ok that’s my list. I’ve been holding it in for months. #DefundThePolice #BlackLivesMatter
5) set up a # like 711 that people can call when a family member or someone else is having a mental health episode. Instead of police trained counselors & health care workers will come. The guy who passes out on my stairs needs help not people w/ guns.
4) this might not be practical but patrol & beat cops shouldn’t be allowed to carry weapons. They can’t be trusted. If there is some kind of a violent situations, like back robberies, a special unit w/ weapons should deal with it.
3) police officers should be required to carry some kind of malpractice insurance. If they shoot an unarmed black man their insurance should cover the payment to families. Bad cops will have enormous rates or might even not be able to get insurance any longer wherever they go.
2) real police reform will not happen as long as police unions exists. If you carry a gun & a license to kill you’re not an ordinary worker. At the very least restrict police unions to negotiating pay & benefits only. Nothing else.
1) w/ respect to defunding police a place to start is eliminating narcotics units. They’re corrupt, unaccountable, and prone to unnecessary violence. They have no impact on overall drug use or drug sales rates. Cut their funding, shift it to treatment & harm reduction.
Hey @lyft do you require drivers to wear masks? Doesn’t seem like it.
