Most watches can fit into a range, from dressy to sporty. But this scale does not work with Otsuka Lotec watches, as the designs are radically different and should be placed on a different scale. This new scale, in order to be useful, should be able to inform prospective buyers on which models they would likely prefer. A scale that can potentially fit all these watches is: watch face presentation complexity (note that this is more about the look and is different from actual complication complexity). On the watch face presentation complexity scale, this is how I would rank the watches from Otsuka Lotec, from simple to complex: この「文字盤の見せ方の複雑さ」の尺度で、大塚ローテックの時計を、シンプルなものから複雑なものへとランキングすると以下のようになります。 No 6. A fan shaped window that is almost like a traditional circle window. Two hands that track hours and minutes. A dial showing hour and minute tracks and a date window. This description sounds very traditional, yet the look of the watch is incredibly special. No 7.5. Full metal surface with three holes. Features jump hour beneath fish eye lens, rotating minutes and seconds disks. No 5. Multi-layered rotating disks beneath two top plates. The top plates offer negative space to the watch face. Hour and minute disks are of the same size and placed vertically at the center. The bottom half of the face mirrors the top half, a symmetrical design. No 9. A true masterpiece that packs numerous features while making it look effortlessly. About 50% of the watch face is covered by the top plate and hour striking mechanism, where the pipeline shaped gong blends into the edges. The other 50% shows layered depth to draw in the wearer's attention. No 5 Kai. This watch has a very busy watch face. While many other wandering hour watches have clean dials to make the subjects stand out, No 5 Kai has layers of elements in the background to create a skeletonized look, but different. No 8. A hero top plate that occupies 70% of the watch face is covered in texts, including “hour”, “min” and “sec” not seen in other models. The rest of the area is packed with other components. Very packed design with little negative space. The earliest two models have symmetrical watch face designs, with No 5 having top-down symmetry, and No 6 having left-right symmetry. While No 5 Kai and No 8 have more complicated watch faces, the No 5 Kai is very easy to read time as the information is in one spot, and No 8 has red inks to attract attention for easy read out. Even though No 8 has the most complicated watch face presentation, it also has the biggest top and bottom watch case to provide a generous clean metallic surface. On this scale, it’s easy to identify the earlier models lean towards simpler watch faces, and newer designs more complicated. It shows Katayama-sama’s progression in design philosophy and technical craftsmanship. I personally am attracted to No 6 the most. The simpler watch face works with my simple outfit style. I am also attracted to exposed screw heads, and the No 6 has 8 screws on the case, and another 3 on the watch face. Plus my background in electrical engineering wants me to wear the No 6, that is if I can get my hands on one.

How Losing Otsuka Lotec’s Watch Lottery Led Me to My First Mechanical Watch Everyone gets into mechanical watches for different reasons. For me, it was fatherhood. I realized I needed a more convenient way to check the time than grabbing my smartphone constantly. So I started searching for a nice watch that truly resonated with me. In the end, it came down to the Otsuka Lotec No. 6, for reasons I’ve already mentioned in my earlier posts. Being an optimistic person, I applied for the January 2026 lottery and expected to win one. I was already imagining myself wearing the watch soon. But I didn’t win. I knew I needed a backup plan. That’s when a distant memory resurfaced. Back in the mid-2000s, I was working on Wall Street. I would frequently shop at Barneys New York, the fashion-forward department store. It was there that I first saw Bell & Ross watches displayed prominently on the first floor. I thought they were incredibly cool and unique. I loved the industrial look and tool-watch vibe. Later, I learned they drew inspiration from aviation instruments, which made me love them even more. But back then, I wasn’t a watch person, so I had little reason to buy one. My backup plan was simple: instead of just getting the Otsuka Lotec No. 6 and wearing it all the time, I would buy a Bell & Ross right away and get the Otsuka Lotec No. 6 later when I eventually win the lottery. Long story short, I went from planning to buy just one watch to now getting two. This could be a slippery slope. Maybe I’ll want even more watches later. The Otsuka Lotec 7.5 looks super cool as well — it could be the perfect watch to wear when I take photos with my Fujifilm X100VI. These days, my 2-year-old daughter is quite fond of my Bell & Ross. She often brings me the watch when we’re getting ready to head outside. As for my progress with the Otsuka Lotec No. 6, this July will mark my third lottery application. I hope I can wear this watch this autumn, on the first day I send my daughter to kindergarten — a big milestone in her life.

Have been seeing photos of Otsuka Lotec No 8 on people’s wrists. Congrats to all owners of this amazing watch. Below is my initial impressions of the No 8 on the day it was announced.
Replying to @o2klotec
The instant I saw the No 8, my brain hurt a little, in a good way. It’s like when I am so happy that tears come out of my eyes. If I am not mistaken, the No 8 is the first watch from Otsuka Lotec with asymmetric case design. Most asymmetric watch cases lean towards organic curve shapes or triangular, which I do not like. The No 8 is unmistakably industrial. The sapphire glass extends beyond the right side to showcase the depth of module, super cool and retro. Two tiny red bars indicating the hour and minute adds to the overall silver look of the watch. Red can also be seen in the No 5 Kai, but in that watch, the color does not play a major role like in the No 8. What I love the most about the No 8 is the minute indicator, that it goes from the bottom to the top, like it is filling up a gauge. Having an engineering background, this design feels romantic to me. This indicator is showing how much time I have lived on this earth, how much I have grown. The design is optimistic. If the design is done the opposite, the indicator goes from top to bottom, then it would seem like the gauge is emptying, like seeing how much gas I have left when I drive a car. I would think about how much time and energy I have left in me. I like the “MIN” text, where the “I” coincides with an indicator mark. This is very cleverly designed. I also like the stainless steel case back. Not having a display case back makes the watch more mature. One thing that looks a bit weird to me is the “Otsuka Lotec” text showing twice around the hour section. It feels a bit overdone, but I know it’s there to balance the look. I personally would love to see the text “大塚ローテック” on the module. That is just me though. To conclude, the No 8 is yet another out-of-the-box design showcasing original ideas and impeccable craftsmanship. Katayama-sama and his team keep the watch industry alive and exciting! P.S. I have seen comments on this watch regarding the price. The price is good for what is being offered here.

I was never a watch wearer. I tried to wear watches many times in the past, didn’t like the feeling. Yet today, I found myself gushing over the Otsuka Lotec No 6. So what happened? Here’s my (insignificant) story. After completing a hardcore engineering degree, I found myself spending the first 10 years of my professional career on Wall Street. Having an interest in fashion at the time, I would visit the high end department store Barneys New York to see what they carry. It was there I came across Bell & Ross watches which left a lasting impression on me. Just before I relocate out of the US, I visited an entrepreneurial friend in the bay area when he was in the early stage of his new venture project. We went yachting for an afternoon and he was wearing a Bell & Ross. I thought maybe I should own one someday. Then I landed in mainland China, and transitioned into the tech space. Got really busy, made awesome things happen, but totally forgot about watches. Up until this point, I have been using a smartphone to check time. And before that, I tried to not use a mobile phone for as long as I can, until it was realistically not possible anymore. What irony for someone with a tech background. About 3 years ago, I decided to raise my new born daughter full time with my wife. We quit our jobs and moved back to Taiwan. At first it was raising my baby at home. Then it was going out to the parks and bath my baby in the sun as she played. My wife realized this first, that taking out a phone just to check time was becoming cumbersome. So we bought ourselves Casio watches. The one I got is the limited edition GAE-2100GC. I started to pay attention to what other people were wearing on their wrists. My elder brother wears a AP Royal Oak Offshore, his wife a Chanel J12. I borrowed these watches and looked at them up close. These are really cool watches! Then I started learning about mechanical watches on YouTube. I happen to watch a video on Japanese watch brands, which probably changed my life. Otsuka Lotec came up. Of all the brands mentioned, I thought Otsuka Lotec watches stood out and spoke to me the most. The No 6 was love on first sight. Then the No 5 Kai came out, which I really liked. I gave my feelings some time to settle down. The No 6 wins out, as it resonates well with my electrical engineer soul. Even if the No 6 and the No 5 Kai are priced exactly the same, I would still prefer the No 6, that’s how much I love the model. January 2026, I asked my 25+ year long time Japanese friend from high school to enter the No 6 lottery for me. No luck. Then suddenly I remembered I used to like Bell & Ross a lot. I checked the brand and saw their diver watches for the first time, even though they had been out for many years already. As a lover of green color, I purchased my first serious mechanical watch, the limited edition bronze diver with green dial. I got my wife a Junghans Max Bill. These two watches serve as backups for us, and we wear them everyday now. So what are our main watches? Well, mine is obviously the Otsuka Lotec No 6, my grail watch. The main watch I want to get for my wife is the Cartier Santos medium in titanium, which doesn’t exist yet, but hope it will come out in 2026. Wearing watches is a form of self expression. While I’ve worked in the high tech space (AI, robotics and blockchain), I actually yearn for the old tech days. The tactility of analog hardware is what I love. That’s why I collect a Rolleiflex TLR and shoot with Fuji X-Pro1. So what do I expect to feel if lucky enough to wear an Otsuka Lotec No 6? It’s going to be a massive confidence boost that I can solve any problem with my electrical engineer mindset.
