The S-Line, a higher-speed passenger rail project to connect Raleigh, NC and Richmond, VA, has been obligated $550 million from the Federal Railroad Administration. The money will go toward upgrading ~75 miles of abandoned, formerly CSX right of way.

the sun belt's entire pitch is "we let you build a house." that's the amenity. it's 104 degrees, there's no sidewalk, and people are moving there by the hundred thousand because california wouldn't legalize a fourplex.

For those keeping track. First full weekend of College Football & NFL with no streetery. Down 20%. Thank god for right hand turn lanes though.

I wish more Americans could wrap their heads around this. Amsterdam is easier to drive in than Atlanta -- despite far, far less road capacity -- because so FEW people have reason to drive cars there.
Give people choices, and the whole city works better.

I advocated for free fares years ago. It just made sense to me: instead of elaborate green and equity initiatives, why not just make transit free? Why collect small fares from the working class in a progressive city?
But then I started riding and learned about it more.
1) generous and popular free fares already exist for low income riders
2) riders do not prioritize free fares, sensibly, because time, stress and uncertainty on transit are a far bigger concern than the small fare
3) the goal is to compete with the car. The biggest barrier to transit competing with cars is not cost. It is travel speed and quality.

There are parts of DC less than 200 feet from a metro where anything denser than a single family home is literally illegal. And the Zoning Handbook is really clear about why.
BeyondDC retweeted
Euclid v. Ambler cut local jurisdictions a blank check to use zoning however they like, such that the typical American city is now a sort of command-and-control centrally planned economy optimized around government-backed class-based apartheid. Overturn it.
