"We do everything to support our national security, but it cannot come at the expense of social security." Andy Burnham, 9th September 2026.

For all the attention rightly given to incentivising young people to join the workforce, there has been far less focus on making it easier to employ young people. Well done done to @KemiBadenoch and the @Conservatives for recognising this 👏
Halving Employers' National Insurance would be a welcome step to bring down the cost of employing young people. The NEETs crisis it too important an issue to be treated as a political football, so I hope @JohnHealey_MP acts on this sensible proposal in the Budget on 28th October.
The policy of cutting Employers’ NICs reflects similar proposals from @TheJobsFndn and @goodgrowthfdn. And @WesStreeting called for a "targeted reduction in employers’ National Insurance" in May.
Let’s make this happen! Do sign up to our NEET Zero campaign. Link below 👇
Burnham's speech gives some clarity on the shape of his agenda. But it's not clear that it chimes with the prospectus Labour were elected on in 2024

Lauren Edwards MP has just made a serious and false allegation about Whitestone Insight on the floor of the House of Commons.
She appears to have conflated us with an entirely different polling company. Whitestone Insight has NOT been criticised by the British Polling Council for failing to disclose who funded our research.
Ms Edwards should retract her statement and apologise.
If an MP has such a tenuous grasp of truth and accuracy when making allegations in Parliament, why should anyone have confidence in her judgement on a matter as momentous — and irreversible — as assisted suicide?

Doors are opening soon for the @TheJobsFndn debate debate on the Wealth Tax with @AaronBastani and Dr @realartlaffer, alongside @Spectator.
The event is completely sold out, so for those that didn't manage to get a ticket, you can stream the debate. Link in the next thread👇
Hugely looking forward to this panel I'll be speaking at on Friday, it promises to be a thoughtful discussion!
💼 New NEET statistics show 13% of 16- to 24-year-olds are not in education, employment or training. For some people, the welfare system is arguably no longer a safety net and more a way of life.
If you're heading to @reformparty_uk national conference next week drop by the Freedom Theatre and join our panel discussion on trading welfare for work w/ @SuellaBraverman, Daniel Herring, @TheJobsFndn's Bertie Hawkins, @JoeShalam and @fsb_policy.

Can rent control fix the housing crisis? No. In fact, it could make things a whole lot worse.

Extraordinary that we're considering something which would cost our university sector so much
£580 million.
That's the cost for allowing EU students to pay UK-student fees at Russell Group universities, according to the CEO of Universities UK.
The figure for the whole of the UK university sector would be even higher.
At the European Affairs Committee this morning, we had the privilege of hearing from @viviennestern, the CEO of @UniversitiesUK about the Erasmus+ scheme and our EU reset.
Given briefings that the Government is considering offering EU students lower fees - the same as UK students - to attend UK universities, it's imperative that we know the full costs to our universities. You can see my question below.

"The secret power of the English settlement is its capacity for renewal."
At ARC, @danny__kruger made the case that even in an age of fragmentation and uncertainty, renewal is possible — and already underway.
Watch the full speech:
1 in 3 conceptions are now aborted. Something needs to change.
Replying to @ONS
The percentage of conceptions leading to abortion has generally been increasing for all age groups since 2015. It reached a record high of 32.1% in 2023.
Women under 16 years remained the age group with highest percentage of conceptions leading to abortion (66.3%).

"The issues that drove Brexit haven't gone away."
Too young to vote in the 2016 referendum at just 12 years old, now 23-year-old Bertie Hawkins says he remembers feeling “pleased” about “taking back control” of the country and would still back Leave today if given the chance.
It was great to make the case for Brexit on @TimesRadio this morning. There's definitely more we can do with our post-Brexit freedoms but we should have the self-confidence not to rejoin a declining economic bloc - that will be just 10% of the world economy by 2040

Trying to resurrect the Assisted Suicide Bill would be a "Crisis? What crisis?" moment for any MP daft enough to try. My article for @Telegraph just out

On Wednesday, I spoke in the Lords on the Autism Act 2009 Committee report.
In it I highlighted that just 30% of autistic adults are in employment, compared with around 75% of the wider working-age population. That's a 45% gap.
I also highlighted the work being done by companies like @greeneking and EdCortex, showing that, with the right support, autistic people can thrive and bring enormous value to employers.
An updated autism strategy must address that 45% gap.

Ten Years On, the topic of Brexit still attracts a packed Old Theatre at the @LSEnews. A wonderful panel including an old friend @anandMenon1 and a former lecturer of mine at the LSE, Tony Travers. Great to see so many students and A Level politics students there. Very fair and thoughtful questions

Did the King's Speech deliver for the million NEETS?
Alan Milburn was right to say "we're at risk of a lost generation" of young people not in employment, education or training. And Starmer was right to call his interim findings "sobering."
But it's time for legislative action to help.

📢 Book announcement! 📢
Since Christmas I’ve been busy working on my latest book: 'Ten Years On' - timed to coincide with the 10th Anniversary of the EU referendum. We've just finished the final proof, and it has now been sent to the printers.
The book is a reflection on the buildup to 2016, but it is also hugely topical with the question of Britain rejoining the EU exploding into the Labour leadership contest and dominating the Makerfield by-election.
It is written for a wide audience who are interested in campaigning, referendums and political history. I go into the key moment of setting up the TaxPayers' Alliance and Big Brother Watch, as well as the inside story of NOtoAV, Business for Britain, and then Vote Leave.
I’m grateful for the kind endorsements it has received, especially from @ShippersUnbound - the preeminent chronicler of the referendum and its aftermath - who described it as “the key missing piece in the Brexit story.”
@ChrisMasonBBC has said that it’s "Highly recommended”, and @GeorgeWParker describes it as "a unique insider’s view into a historic turning point for Britain."
Do please pre-order your copy on Amazon, or from the @BitebackPub website!

It’s tempting to think the economic problems in the UK are the same as those in the US. But Britain is far poorer. Mississippi, the poorest US state, has a higher GDP per capita ($54,000) than the UK ($52,000).
We have all the fundamentals - superb entrepreneurs, world-leading universities and ambitious workers - but we don't pursue policies which turn this into national prosperity.
Brexit was - and is - a turning point. It gave us freedom to make this happen. It's time to go for growth.
