I grew up in apartheid S Africa, where muzzling of speech and encroachment on academic freedom were the norm. I came to the US to pursue a career in science. I never thought that at this stage of my career, I would ever experience my youth again. #StandUpForScience #ADA #ADA2026

I am profoundly disturbed by the ejection of Steven Kahn and his colleagues from the American Diabetes Association’s meeting as they handed out copies of their op-ed criticizing the Trump administration’s devastating damage to American biomedical research.
Director Bhattacharya promised to foster open dialogue and debate in science. Instead, he is presiding over an environment where dissent has no place and scientists who dare criticize the regime are cast out.
Director Bhattacharya, other HHS and NIH leadership, and the leadership of the American Diabetes Association must immediately explain what their roles were in the ejection of Dr. Kahn and his colleagues, and anyone involved in what appears to be a blatant act of political censorship must be held accountable.
Censorship and intimidation have no place in science. Discovery, innovation, and the millions of patients who are waiting for cures demand curiosity-driven science, free from political interference.
Check out the pre-print for the influence of alpha cells on islet Ca2+ responses, including first-responders and first phase timing/amplitude. Was great to be part of this!
BiorXiv:
Islet GLP1-R signaling has 2x effect on 1st phase amplitude, 4x effect on frequency of Ca2+ oscillations (proxy for 2nd phase insulin secretion), 1st responders, and hubs - all without gut - derived GLP. Alpha cells & glucagon are main suspects.

Imagine what would happen today if @doge posted on @x there was a study “testing the venom of Gila monsters to determine if they can cure diabetes “.

Wow! Mathematical modelling of insulin secretion, integrating many upstream and downstream processes - including dual effects of H2O2 and NADPH (and SENP1) at distinct points in secretion. From some colleagues in Maribor.

Congratulations to #lorisussel on the award of 2024 EASD Albert Renold Prize!
Check it out- this was a great collaboration with
@merrinslab
and great work from Erli and
@JenniferKBriggs. Come see our talk too, at EASD on the Thursday 12th Sept.
Our new preprint presents 3D light-sheet imaging of the intact islet, focusing on β-cell subpopulations that lead and coordinate islet Ca2+ oscillations. Great collaboration between Erli Jin, @JenniferKBriggs, and @BennyScience . biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
Congratulations Turkiye - that game was insane.

I’m thrilled to announce I am joining the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes at @CUAnschutz! I can’t wait to bridge our prior work on metabolic and epigenomic regulation of beta cell (mal)adaptation into the T1D space. I’ll be recruiting at all levels—reach out if interested!

Together with Brad Peercy, we summarise @BennyScience & @JenniferKBriggs recent eLife study, which shows that beta cell subpopulations AND electrical coupling both contribute to islet Ca2+ dynamics, helping reconcile the two previously opposing viewpoints! elifesciences.org/articles/9…
