If the 'current' costs of #HS2 were known at the time of Notice to Proceed (15 April 2020) its benefit cost ratio would be 'between 0.3 and 0.4' according to the Department for Transport

This, from DfT annual report, shows capital spending on roads, rail and HS2.
Spending on HS2 is, year after year, higher than on the whole of the rest of the rail network, and nearly twice total spending on national highways.
Just think what could have been done instead.
This prediction about #midlandsrailhub v1.0 turned out to be 100% correct. #birmingham #gbrail xitter.cf/belebenso/status/14484…

Both #CampHillChords connected into Moor Street bay platforms, with a junction in mid-air? #PullTheOtherOne #NotGonnaHappen #Unbuildable #hs2
Looks like there is only one viable configuration for the Bordesley chords, sadly it's not the one chosen by the 'Midlands Rail Hub Alliance'. #birmingham #midlandsrailhub #wrongdesign
Taking this a little further, fit 'sofia metro' drop down barriers ≈2 metres from the platform edges for deployment during train prep. #YoureWelcome #euston

Announce the platform, and hold passengers on the ramp or the platform if you must. #HelpfulSuggestions #euston
Poorly thought through #MidlandsRailHub proposals reduce the line from Moor Street to Small Heath to two tracks, a colossal design fault. #StupidAs #Birmingham
Not so long ago, Bordesley east chord of #midlandsrailhub was just intended to be used by a couple of trains to Leicester. Now it's being promoted as a route to Leeds as well
If Bordesley east chord were to be built, it would need to connect directly into the through Snow Hill lines, to pass any sanity test.
This is vastly different to the current ultra-weird #MidlandsRailHub proposal. #networkrail #birmingham
Why does #HS2 cost £100 bn?

Some more reasons why HS2 is cripplingly expensive:
It's not just a railway, it's also a 140 mile long nature reserve.
7 million trees and shrubs. Net biodiversity gains. Rare fauna planting. Chalk hill reshaping. Wetland creation. Cycle paths and bridleways. Reptile habitats. Public viewing points. River realignment with new bends, pools, and riffles.
"Alongside the construction of Britain's new high speed railway, HS2 is delivering one of the largest environmental programmes ever undertaken in the UK".
You'd think that a new railway would be environmentally beneficial enough. But no. Because this is a government project it can't just be a railway. It has to be a nature reserve too, and a jobs creator, plus a view protector, forest creator, and the most expensive bat protection project in the world.
Thanks to all these expensive boondoggles, the railway itself has been cut and cut and cut, and no longer goes to Leeds or Manchester - it's been slashed from 330 miles to 140.
It would obviously be better for the environment to have forgone the nature slop and just built the sodding railway in full, on time, and within budget.
The Victorians weren't magically better at building than we seemingly are today. When private companies build a railway they care about costs, profit, and efficiency. When a government builds a railway they care about creating a camel to appeal to all people.
It can't just be a railway. It has to be so much more. And that's when we see costs spiral to destruction.
The 'Midlands Rail Hub Alliance' claim that their #rail scheme will "reduce the level of congestion currently seen at #Birmingham New Street station".
But there's **no evidence** for this.
As far as current traffic levels at New Street is concerned, #MidlandsRailHub would take 2 Camp Hill trains per hour per direction out of New Street, but add 2 tpdph, on the 'Cross-city' Lichfield Redditch line.
Obviously, this output is not what the Midlands Rail Hub Alliance, or Mr Plisner's video, are claiming. xitter.cf/belebenso/status/20915…

#HS2 - not like they weren't told at start.

An exaggeration by DfT. I'm not impressed by the Wild Reset. When it comes to buying trains he chooses to ask HS2 which has consistently got it wrong from the start. Like the 1 door fiasco & level boarding. 300km/h trains need high floors. Sub 250 is better for capacity.
Clickbait video about the 'M40 route for #HS2' says it's the "proposition put forward by some opponents of HS2".
But it was actually 'put forward' by er, The Labour Party, and engineering consultancy Arup.
Arup are also the driving force behind the deplorable 'HS2 phase 2a Lite' reboot and the #NorthernPowerhouseRail scam, both backed by #uklabour #hs2 railnews.co.uk/news/general/…

The new Highways (Financing) Bill will lead to a new generation of tolled roads.
This privatisation of roads stands in stark contrast to the nationalisation of the railways.
Today we've renationalised the UK's largest train operator.
Passengers will see fewer last-minute cancellations, cleaner toilets and more services to Gatwick Airport.
We are building Great British Railways. 🇬🇧🚆
