ALT Victorian-style illustration inspired by Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. The Ghost of Christmas Present, an imposing bearded figure in a green, fur-trimmed robe and holly crown, sternly rebukes a hunched Ebenezer Scrooge in a candlelit room decorated for Christmas. Below them, an ornate gold frame surrounds parchment bearing the Ghost's words: “Man, if man you be in heart; not adamant; forbear that wicked cant until you have discovered What the surplus is, and Where it is.” A second quotation reads: “Oh God, to hear the Insect on the leaf, pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust!” The text is printed in elegant Victorian lettering, with selected words in red. Holly, berries and candles decorate the border. The passage condemns the arrogance of judging other people's lives as expendable. Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol, 1843.
