OK, I made this with Codex + Google Flow. Spent 2.5 hours and about $20 worth of subscription credits. It’s not bad, and I can see myself working at this place if AI takes over academia.

You can now listen to most opinions in Case Viewer, with a text-to-speech algorithm tuned for legal content (notice how it compresses the U.S. cite). And it will keep playing from the background or lock screen like a podcast. caseviewer.app

~All US universities share the same governance structure: an external board & its chosen managers wield essentially absolute power. In a new draft, “In Search of University Democracy” (forthcoming in @PennLRev), David Pozen & I ask why US higher ed has adopted this model ... 1/

A good summary of @CaseViewerApp, courtesy of Claude Code, based just on its review of the codebase:

Here's a quick video of the new Table of Contents feature in Case Viewer — now available for Mac, iPad, and iPhone (caseviewer.app).
It extracts the opinion's actual heading structure, uses an LLM to make descriptive section labels, and maps the argument structure too.

Amazingly useful time-saving and even fun tool for legal nerds.
Case Viewer, my quirky side project of building my ideal legal search & reading app, has come a long way. With lots of help, it's grown into the best way to find & read cases on a Mac or iOS. Check it out or download on the App Store below. And follow @CaseViewerApp for updates!

When the Trump administration said Harvard violated the law by tolerating discrimination against Jewish students, what was most striking, writes @beidelson, was the “brazen hypocrisy — one might even say chutzpah — of the Trump lawyers’ arguments.”

The legal authority that is the foundation for the Trump Administration's war against the universities — Title VI — likely gives it no legal claim against the universities. New article by Benjamin Eidelson & Deborah Hellman:

My cousin Amy was like, hey do you want to write "Lady Macbeth Pushes Biden to Drop Out" with me, and I was like "Sure!"

Was it not bitter? My lord, the milk of human kindness has run dry.

If @CaseViewerApp isn't working, download the latest update (0.9.6) from within the app & it should be fixed. (There's a server outage for @CaselawAccess, and a bug in Case Viewer's handling of that error was making all searches fail as a result.)

Dave Pozen with some very interesting, very smart, and very provocative points about what Columbia's response to the student protests tells us about the contemporary university. balkin.blogspot.com/2024/05/…

If you use @CaseViewerApp, enable the 'early channel' in the dropdown menu to try a new update (0.9.4) that adds informative tooltips to most links to cases & statutes (with more info to come someday—suggestions welcome)

How do we live in a world where the best native legal research app on Windows, Mac, or iOS is @beidelson's @CaseViewerApp? No shade at all to that truly excellent product, but that's one guy doing a side gig. This is a multibillion dollar market!
