Grateful to have just been awarded 1st place for 2023 Environment Reporting from @AZPressClub for my narrative investigation into Arizona's climate + housing crises. Thx to @mit_esi for support & congrats to my @azcentral colleagues on the category sweep!

Last month, a whole slew of news outlets publ. that the cottonwoods uprooted in AZ for the border wall were βancientβ, or 200 years old. Apparently none fact-checked this w/ a scientist.
I did. She said theyβre at most 146, but age is not why they matter:

It has been a wild week as a #climate reporter in Arizona. On Mon, I hiked to bottom of #GrandCanyon to report on deadly #flashflood. No one else has done that.
Today, my story is front of @azcentral. My photos are in WaPo. And I went on @12News to explain role of #climatechange
Here's my spot on @12News explaining how multiple things can all be true, a concept that seems to be really hard for people...
1. The fire could've been mismanaged
2. The forest could've been overgrown
3. *AND* what we're seeing here is also #climatechange

As far as I know, Iβm the only reporter to make it to the bottom of the Grand Canyon on foot since the major flash flooding damage on Aug. 29.

Incredible reporting from @beecycles about why 320,000 acres of Arizona public lands are being leased even though geologists agree there's no oil there. Worth a read, it's a wild ride. azcentral.com/story/news/locβ¦
Wait...are they putting a paywall of sorts on the White House website? We now can't read executive orders without signing up for Trump's email list?! Has anyone else run into this?

Today, keeping up with my monthly series profiling Arizona #climate leaders, I have a story out about a man who found such fascination and species diversity on an overlooked, remote rim that he just had to give it a name: the Mogollon Highlands.

Every oil state disposes of toxic wastewater underground. But in Oklahoma, it hasn't been staying there, creating large, ongoing pollution events known as "purges."

I'm riding my mountain bike on the 850-mile Arizona Trail this fall to see and write about #climate impacts along the way. We're publishing weekly dispatches from the trail in The Arizona Republic | @azcentral as I go.
The first one just dropped:
