Horrible take which shows no compassion, empathy or awareness of the effects of trauma on the human brain.

Yesterday, a combined 23 guild journalists from the Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald and Bradenton Herald were laid off by McClatchy. We have launched a GoFundMe to help our colleagues, whose livelihoods and families have been upended by this decision. gofund.me/85e427c56

To the @MiamiHerald journalists laid off this week: I’m so sorry and so pissed off for you. If you’ve got a Miami story in your pocket that deserves to be told, I need freelancers at Miami New Times and I’d love to pay you to tell it. And if you just need some assignments to help keep you afloat in the coming weeks, my DMs are open. Let’s talk. [email protected]

"Creating news deserts is a net-positive long-term investment b/c without investigative, damning coverage of businesses, hedge funds will make money off their assets." Democracy dies in darkness.
People ask "But don't the hedge funds want the media to produce the kind of content that makes money?" I've advised hedge funds on the intersection of business, politics, and journalism and let me tell you, no the hedge funds don't want that. Creating news deserts is a net-positive long-term investment b/c without investigative, damning coverage of businesses, hedge funds will make money off their assets. If you are a hedge fund, it's less expensive to just buy a newspaper and starve it than fight a multi-year public relations battle over some of your controversial assets.

It would be fun if public libraries were well-funded and open in the evenings and we built a culture where it’s normal to gather at the library after work and browse the shelves and chat about the latest books and read the Saturday night away.

Ta-Nehisi Coates’ new book, “The Message,” is a trio of interconnected essays that examine how the stories people tell — or avoid telling — can shape and even distort reality: “I am most concerned always with those that don’t have a voice.” cbsn.ws/4gJxe2g

One caller asked for help finding her brother. Another needed info about evacuation routes. A third worried if a nearby dam was about to burst. And many callers said "I'm just so proud of my neighbors." Local radio in western North Carolina is a literal lifeline right now 🧵

(1/3) Removing newspapers from circulation is censorship, @penn_state. Plain and simple. The university says it removed @DailyCollegian's 35 newsstands — and all the papers — because of a prohibition of on-campus advertising. But it doesn't add up.

Absolutely abhorrent behavior by Penn State. And to its own hardworking and immensely talented students. The Collegian is one of the best student papers in the country. PSU can cut funding and remove newsstands, but the paper isn't going anywhere, whether they like it or not.
