In Nov, Becky Castle Miller ( @bcastlemiller) started following my tips on writing zero drafts for her dissertation.
Since then, she has written zero drafts of 32,000 words.
And she's submitted first drafts of her Intro (7,000 words) and second chapter (14,000 words).
This is extraordinary progress.
She says, "handwriting zero drafts any time I feel struck has radically changed my academic writing life."
This means so much to me.
I’m mortified about what I saw in a Rorschach inkblot test 🫣

“Not every overwhelming experience is an emotion—sometimes it’s a trauma response. First we calm the body, then we can think.”
I joined The Steadfast Podcast to talk about how emotions are made, co-regulation, and how to tell an emotional response from a trauma response.
I appreciate this teaching about Job, suffering, and lament from @SteveElshaw

Before I went to seminary and moved into ministry and academia researching emotions, I worked in marketing and advertising.
I have never seen a crisis PR response this good. 👏🏼

What might you be getting wrong about the Bible?
About the Gospel of Luke in particular?
About emotions?
Enjoy this delightful conversation I had with Heather Thompson Day on her podcast.

When you were doing an undergrad, you wanted to do a masters. When you did a masters, you wanted to do a PhD. Now you’re doing a PhD, you want to be a cat.

Trauma doesn't make people stronger. It damages their nervous system. It hijacks their digestive track. It keeps the person in a constant loop of hypervigilance. To tell someone they are stronger because of trauma is to deny what it cost them to survive it.

Please, God, guard my heart from hatred masquerading as righteous anger.
Help me to know how to react like You do to injustice -- with anger that does not become contempt, bitterness, or enmity. Because my human anger does not produce the justice that You desire.
