Pope Leo XIV leaves hospital, greeting well-wishers, including a Ukrainian girl who had been treated for cancer in Italy. He’s now back in the Vatican ready for his first public appearance on Sunday, while all eyes are on the status of his planned trip to Latin America.

Pope Leo XIV reaffirms Catholic teaching that the death penalty is "inadmissible", posting a day after Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Holy See Secretary of State, spoke out against the planned public execution of Nidal Hasan. NB In 2011, Rev. Robert Prevost sent a message to the then Governor of Illinois, Pat Quinn, to thank him for abolishing capital punishment. xitter.cf/Pontifex/status/210888…
The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

Woman religious becomes first female president of Pontifical Mission Societies: “For me it is a beautiful sign for the Church, but also a responsibility that I imagine will be quite difficult to take on. But God is there, and through God’s grace I can live this responsibility”: @SarahRMacDonald reports for @The_Tablet thetablet.co.uk/news/woman-r…

In awarding this year’s #NobelPeacePrize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wants to remind the world that the rule of law – national and international – underpins the system we have set up to ensure peace and resolve conflicts non-violently. Peace requires justice. History has shown that a world operating without the rule of law is unjust, unwise and inhumane. The judges – those who guard the thin red line between order and chaos – are therefore highly deserving of our praise. But today, as these same judges are sanctioned, and their institutions are attacked, we need people of courage, vision and determination – qualities that 2026 peace laureate Navi Pillay demonstrates in her work on the bench. #NobelPrize

Taking a principled stand is a hard decision to take but the easiest one to live with. Bravo 🙌 Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has withdrawn from Ireland’s Nations League match against Israel and released a statement: “Representing my country means everything to me. I have the utmost respect for every single one of my teammates, the manager, his staff and the Irish people. However, I have reached a decision that I have not taken lightly. I am a man of strong faith and try my best to be a person of character and principle. Therefore, I feel it would be wrong to participate in the upcoming fixtures against Israel. My decision is based purely upon my personal belief that the killing of innocent people is wrong. It is important to note that my stance is not in opposition to the Israeli people or the Jewish community, but against the atrocities in the region. There are few times in life when you get a chance to stand up for something bigger, and I strongly believe that this is one of them.” #GavinBazunu

📣 Today the Church worldwide celebrates the 112th #WDMR2026, on the theme "Even Just One of These Children." We cannot remain indifferent to the cry of displaced minors, nor become accustomed to so much suffering. #PopeLeoXIV humandevelopment.va/en/news/…

🇵🇸🇻🇦 “The Holy See reiterates its call for an end to the ongoing violence against the Palestinian civilian population in the West Bank, particularly the escalation of hostilities, home demolitions, and movement restrictions driving the displacement of Palestinian communities. On the situation in Gaza, the Holy See remains concerned about the dire humanitarian crisis, the widespread destruction, mass displacement, and the severe persisting shortages. In this regard, we urge the international community to work towards advancing the two-state solution, with a view to bringing about a just and lasting peace.”
