The philosopher Peter Hallward was arrested today for holding a sign saying simply: “In the UK it’s a crime to say I support Palestine Action.” He’s produced some of the best journalism on the proscription of Palestine Action—particularly this article on the Filton 4…
A good moment to return to this article by Peter Hallward on the Palestine Action Filton case, and the underreported legal precedent it established: Protestors are now no longer allowed to refer to their motivations for their actions before a jury... 1/2 communispress.com/may-we-exp…

Oh okay, just normal stuff.
Isn't it weird what The Guardian can exclusively reveal, two days after a parliamentary by-election in the council area, what the council knew? I wonder who the current leader of that council is and which party is and was then in control?

Tower Hamlets Council refused the Brick Lane data centre unanimously. Nine resident groups opposed it. The council and the mayor asked for housing instead. The government approved it anyway, through ministerial recovery, with the letter signed on behalf of Angela Rayner. The scheme offers 44 homes, six of them for social rent, and a data centre built around high-frequency trading. Rayner's partner, Sam Tarry, has been senior adviser since May at NorthPoint Strategy, a lobby firm whose sectors include AI, crypto and energy. Its chair is Tory peer Lord Wharton. Its crypto council lists Andreessen Horowitz among its clients. NorthPoint says Tarry helps clients "shape policy agendas". The minister who decides where data centres go shares a household with the adviser to the industry that needs them. 🧵 europeanpowell.substack.com/…

A point so glaringly obvious that it's totally incomprehensible to the media and political class.
.@ZackPolanski: "[Palestinians] are facing an ongoing genocide & its very obvious to me & clear, that if there is an ongoing genocide then that is underpinned by a racist ideology" 🎯

Televising a public execution is beyond disgusting and barbaric. The death penalty should not exist, let alone be a live-streamed spectacle. This is a grotesque violation of human dignity. We must oppose this - and the death penalty - everywhere. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmy0…

One necessary constituent part of statehood is defined borders. Israel has never legally defined its own. Without a definition of its territorial extent, issues of Israel's "right to exist" should vex the questioner as much as the person being asked.
Why do people only ever ask 'Does Israel have the right to exist?' How about Lebanon? Does Lebanon have the right to exist? Syria? At the moment, parts of those countries are under occupation. Do journalists ask questions about those countries' rights to exist?

Another terrible loss - I’m shocked to learn Chris Wickham has died. I admired his work at a distance and only got to meet him when his great work Framing the Early Middle Ages was awarded the @DeutscherPrize in 2005. I got to know him better when he joined the Deutscher … 1/

We TRIPLED our vote share. Second best byelection result in Green Party history. On a date Labour chose to deliberately clash same week as our conference. All with a brand new PM in previously a "safe" seat. Best response to absolute nonsense today? Join.greenparty.org.uk

I assume BBC Panorama is making a programme about Burnham and Manchester's relationship with the UAE, as now exposed by Manchester City scandal. If not, then the Panorama editor should consider their position.

Incredible thread and I agree with everything here. Give it a read. 🧵⬇️
Justification is the interesting thing here. The drug-addled finance bro deals with immediate intelligibilities: no school is needed to feel the power of money. His whole `career' deals in producing commodities, nothing more. It is a plane of rapidity because understanding is
