I posted on LinkedIn this morning about still being open to a salaried role in a newsroom someplace. At the risk of being immodest, I think I’ve earned my stripes after almost a decade and think you should hire me to report on disability in tech. linkedin.com/posts/steven-aq…
This ought to be something to cheer, but it’s so bizarrely bad with VoiceOver. iOS components come baked with so much accessibility support out of the box – it takes *effort* to make something this opaque. Why? To save some money? The V in MVP should include “usable by everyone.”
7.26 billion people own mobile phones, but the majority use them for one purpose: consumption. As of today, every single smartphone can now be used for something more: software creation. Introducing the Replit mobile app on Android and iOS. Code anything, anywhere.

One of the reasons I love working in #a11y is that it's SO deeply multifaceted. #Accessibility is about: 🎨 Design 👩🏻‍💻 Engineering 💁🏽 UX 🎁 Product …and most importantly… 👯 People I may not be good at all these things, but the chance to think about them all daily is a gift!
Thinking that accessibility is simply an engineering problem to be solved is very common. It's also a massive part of the problem.

People are excited for spooky season, but October is also Nat’l Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). Contrary to what society says, disabled people contribute much to the economy. Disability deserves more representation in the workplace—especially in newsrooms!

I remember folks ragging on this talk when I delivered it, saying it was too easy and they knew it already. It’s helped over 10,000 people since, and is the most watched @dotSwift talk from any year. If you have a talk you think would be great, no matter how “easy”, go for it! 🚀
I just saw @twostraws's conference for dotSwift as a part of day 51 of #100daysofswift, and it was so informative ahhh! Left me with a lot to read and research about! super fun stuff too! here's the link if anyone is interested: youtube.com/watch?v=OgU8d_E1…

Want to make your app accessible? Today, Abra and Q42 are launching a new platform to help you do that: beta.appt.org/en/. With relevant data, guidelines and code examples for iOS, Android, Flutter etc. We're looking forward to your feedback! #accessibility #appdevelopment
🧵 The is<AT>Running APIs on iOS can be really helpful; they're also a good example of "with great power comes great responsibility." A few thoughts! 1) VO isn't the only assistive tech on iOS. There are Switch Control, Voice Control and more. It's important to understand...
I'm surprised at how little I've seen this, but you can use UIAccessibility to check if assistive technologies are currently enabled, such as UIAccessibility.isVoiceOverRunning. This comes in handy when you want to really sculpt specific accessible behaviors!

For me, #Accessibility is both about making products and services for everyone and deeply considering the individual experience of each user. Some Friday afternoon musings in the form of a brief story time from earlier in my #a11y career: sommerpanage.com/posts/2022-…

I’m teaching an online workshop on Text and Localization in SwiftUI at @tryswiftworld next week: tryswift.co/world/ It will cover lots of techniques for localizing apps, displaying rich text, formatting data and adapting layout for dynamic text sizes with the focus on iOS 16

🎓 Today I learned: In the #iOS simulator you can increase/decrease the dynamic font size with a very simple keyboard shortcut which is great for testing #accessibility through your apps. 👷 ⚙️ The two shortcuts are: ⌥ ⌘ + (increase font size) ⌥ ⌘ - (decrease font size)
