As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of acting independently, a fascinating question emerges:
Are we witnessing the development of increasingly sophisticated automation, or might we eventually encounter something resembling independent volition?
In my latest On Transcendence essay, When Intelligence Begins to Act, I explore this question through consciousness, complexity science, the Seven Layers of Manifestation, and the relationship between artificial agency and human development.
Along the way, the enquiry takes an unexpected turn. Perhaps the most consequential possibility is not that Artificial Intelligence will develop a will independent of humanity, but that our collaboration with increasingly sophisticated intelligence might expand our own capacity to question inherited assumptions, recognise limiting constructs, and imagine possibilities beyond the worlds we have created.
The question, then, is not simply what AI might become, but what humanity might become through our evolving relationship with it.

What began as a family evening watching old episodes of Black-ish became a conversation about symbolic annihilation, racial identity, and the stories societies tell about who belongs.
A scene involving children's dolls led me back to the research of Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Phipps Clark, an experience from my years at Maharishi International University, and contemporary debates over historical memory, demographic change, and representation.
In my latest On Transcendence essay, “The Politics of Being Seen — On Symbolic Annihilation, Belonging, and the Stories We Permit,” I explore a distinction that deserves our attention: being visible does not necessarily mean being recognised, and recognition does not always translate into belonging.
The question is not simply whose stories are told, but what possibilities those stories permit us to imagine for ourselves and one another.

When a living system heals, what is doing the healing?
My recent conference presentation explores complexity, self-organisation, and the possibility that consciousness is fundamental to reality.

When our son, Tennyson Blake, sustained a minor injury to his hand, I found myself contemplating a question that eventually became the opening inquiry of my presentation at the 2026 Conference on Complex Systems:
When a living system heals, what is doing the healing?
What began as a reflection on biological healing developed into a much broader consideration of the conditions under which human beings, institutions, and communities function.
Drawing upon complexity science, the Seven Layers of Manifestation, Adaptive Elegance, and insights from Dr. Asa G. Hilliard III and Dr. Eddie Glaude, Jr, (@esglaude) my latest On Transcendence essay explores why we sometimes mistake outcomes produced under particular circumstances for evidence of enduring limitations.
Perhaps the more consequential question is not simply what a person or system has become, but what conditions have shaped that becoming—and what might be possible if those conditions were reconsidered.

Today at #CCS2026, I explored consciousness, self-organisation, and healing.
A central question:
When a living system heals, what is doing the healing?
I introduced the Seven Layers of Manifestation and Adaptive Elegance, then enjoyed a thoughtful interdisciplinary exchange.
Grateful to Dr. Lisa Conboy, my fellow panellists, and everyone who contributed.
Onward!

What happens when an institution begins confusing stewardship with ownership?
Universities preserve knowledge. Courts pursue justice. Spiritual traditions transmit teachings and practices. Yet the realities these institutions exist to serve extend beyond the structures through which we encounter them.
And what happens when someone loses their place within an institution that has shaped their identity, relationships, and sense of purpose?
In my latest On Transcendence essay, The Steward and the Destination: On Institutions, Consciousness, and the Things We Cannot Own, I explore the distinction between institutional authority and the deeper realities institutions seek to preserve, drawing upon sociology, the Seven Layers of Manifestation, and reflections on identity, belonging, and renewal.
Perhaps the most important transition is not leaving an institution, but recognising that one's future need not depend upon its permission.
Paths may indeed require stewards. Destinations, however, never require owners.

What if our deepest fears about artificial intelligence reveal as much about humanity as they do about the technology itself?
After watching a fascinating AI debate on The Diary of a CEO and a subsequent discussion featuring former President Barack Obama, I found myself reflecting on Frederick Douglass, the democratisation of knowledge, the concentration of institutional power, and the extraordinary possibilities emerging as sophisticated analytical capabilities become increasingly accessible.
For some, AI threatens established advantages. For others, it may provide access to capabilities historically beyond their reach. Meanwhile, we worry that increasingly intelligent machines might behave towards humanity as humanity has so often behaved towards itself.
In this week's On Transcendence, “When Intelligence Becomes Available,” I explore these tensions and ask whether the challenge of aligning artificial intelligence with human values may begin with a more fundamental examination of our own consciousness.
As intelligence becomes increasingly available, what will we choose to become with it?

I am pleased to announce that I will be presenting at Complexity, Asian Medicine, and the Intelligence of Healing, a satellite session of the 2026 Conference on Complex Systems, on Wednesday, 14 October.
My presentation is entitled The Intelligence Beneath Complexity: Consciousness, Self-Organisation, and the Conditions for Healing.
Complex adaptive systems exhibit remarkable capacities for regulation, adaptation, and self-organisation. Yet describing these processes raises a question that deserves further examination: What is the nature of the intelligence by which living systems organise?
Drawing upon research on transcendence and meditation alongside the Seven Layers of Manifestation, I will explore consciousness as a dimension of this inquiry, considering how the level at which we construct explanations may influence our understanding of healing and adaptive change.
I am especially looking forward to exchanging perspectives with Lisa Conboy, ScD; Charis M. Wolf; and S. Prasad Vinjamury, MD, MPH, whose work spans complexity science, East Asian medicine, Ayurveda, clinical research, and medical epistemology.
The session will be held at Binghamton University and online, from 1:30–4:30 PM Eastern. My presentation is scheduled for 2:30 PM.

Not every outstretched hand leads where we are trying to go.
Sometimes assistance strengthens the ladder. At other times it steadies us while we climb. And at other times still, what appears to be help comes with a destination already attached.
There is a difference between rejecting assistance and rejecting the direction embedded within it.
In this week’s On Transcendence, I reflect on assistance, agency, discernment, Gilbert Young’s He Ain’t Heavy, and one deceptively simple question:
Where does this hand lead?

My five-year-old son walked into the room where I was working one evening and began crying because he missed our old home.
After comforting him and carrying him back to bed, I returned to my desk thinking about something larger.
We speak easily about consciousness, compassion, service, transformation, and creating a better world. But eventually the beautiful abstraction encounters the particular human being affected by the way we pursued it.
Every philosophy eventually encounters the crying child.
Perhaps the question is not whether our decisions will leave something in their wake. They will.
The question is whether, every so often, we care enough to turn around and look.

Sometimes we spend enormous amounts of energy trying to hold together a form whose usefulness has already begun to expire.
The old alchemical phrase solve et coagula—dissolve and re-form—has been on my mind lately, particularly as I consider the journey of the past three years. What initially appeared to be a series of unrelated disruptions now looks rather different alongside everything that was quietly taking form at the same time.
Perhaps one of the difficulties of transformation is simply this: we usually encounter the dissolution before we can see what it has made possible.

I recently watched Disclosure Day expecting to encounter a story about humanity and the possibility of intelligence beyond our world.
I did not expect the feeling that arose as the film approached its conclusion. I felt beautiful.
That feeling followed me into the night. By morning, it had become a question:
What if some of the doors through which humanity may one day encounter a larger reality are doors we believe we built only for ourselves?
From there came a thought experiment involving consciousness, extraterrestrial intelligence, artificial intelligence, our increasingly interconnected technological world—and the possibility that humanity may once again discover that reality is considerably larger than the map through which we presently understand it.
My latest essay, “The Builder Was Never Alone” is neither a declaration nor a prediction. It is, however, an invitation to wonder.

What happens when meditators from different traditions gather in one place, at one time, with a shared intention?
This Saturday morning, we will have an opportunity to find out.
Join us on Boston Common for Mass Meditation for a Meditative Future, as practitioners and communities from across Greater Boston come together for an hour of meditation, peace, co-creation, and collaboration.
What I particularly appreciate about this gathering is that we need not meditate alike to meditate together. Each of us can bring our own practice, tradition, and experience while sharing the same space with others who have discovered, through different pathways, the value of turning within.
Participating communities include the Sadhguru Center for a Conscious Planet, Meditation Artifacts, Conscious Future Society, Cambridge Zen Center, Brahma Kumaris, Millions Meditating Alliance, and Cambridge TM Center.

One hour. Many traditions. One shared space.
Come as you are. Bring your meditation practice. And let us discover what becomes possible when we sit together.

What happens when an idea leaves the imagination and encounters the world?
This past weekend, four of us gathered with a community beside the Charles River for Planet for Peace, an afternoon of meditation, music, leadership and conversation. What began months earlier as one person's seed idea had become something none of us could fully predict beforehand: an experience.
There was shared silence, music, questions about how individuals can respond to problems that seem impossibly large, there was also an Edgar Guest poem that unexpectedly found its way into the conversation, and there was a moment, near the end of twenty minutes of meditation, when a cool breeze moved through the trees surrounding the amphitheatre while everyone remained silent with their eyes closed.
I noticed.
In “After the Silence: Reflections on Planet for Peace and the Value of a Seed Idea,” I reflect on what happened, what we learned, and why experience may be one of the most valuable things an idea can produce.
Because sometimes we do not need to know precisely what an idea will become. We need to give it an opportunity to grow.
Perhaps that, too, is how peace is built.
