How “metacognitive” are confidence judgments? Do choice and confidence emerge together as we make a decision? In this piece for The Transmitter, I suggest that the answer may depend on the task.

New preprint alert! Do words or numbers better capture our confidence?
We found that words (eg "very likely") predict choice accuracy more reliably than numbers.
I’m highly confident you’ll like it. Or is it 85% confident? :-) biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…
New preprint.
Is confidence a “second thought”… or just part of the first one?

New preprint: visual attention may follow decisions more than it shapes them.
We identify behavioral signatures inconsistent with models in which attention affects value, instead pointing to a substantial post-decisional component.

Do you "look at nothing" when making a decision?
Here we provide further evidence about the connection betwee gaze into nothing and decision confidence, revealing more on the sequential hidden dynamics of decisions

thanks to the great colleagues at @CNIR_IBS, settling in Korea has been going well. it's time to hire! we're looking for postdocs, grad students, & RAs, to work on projects like e.g. inducing blindsight in NHP via electrical microstimulations, or similarly via optogenetics ... 1/
Delighted to share this preprint!
How is the confidence in a decision represented in the brain?
With @shadlen we show that the lateral intraparietal (LIP) neurons that represent evidence accumulation also represent the probability that the decision is correct (i.e., confidence).
