I am very social if my interest is piqued. I might still be awkward but I won't shy.
I used to think I “struggled with socializing.” But what I actually struggled with was socializing without shared interest, structure, or purpose. Once I started noticing this difference, my nervous system made a lot more sense.

Autism and being misperceived as “snobby” or “stuck-up” Autistic people’s differences, experiences and challenges are often misperceived as being indicative of being “snobby” or “stuck-up” when this is not reflective of reality and what’s actually going on is very different. What may look like being “snobby” or “stuck-up” can actually be nothing to do with anyone else or how we feel about them, but instead reflect our differences, experiences and the challenges we encounter as autistic people. For example, we may: - be quiet at times because we frequently experience delayed processing and, also, it can be difficult for us to find (feasible) opportunities to speak - not because we think we’re “above” speaking to other people. - make less eye contact because we can find eye contact overwhelming - not because we think we’re “too good” to make eye contact with other people. - like to share our knowledge and ideas, out of kindness, hoping to be helpful - not to be condescending. - sometimes have more succinct facial expressions, because of how we emote - not because we are disinterested. - like to dress up, because we often feel more comfortable dressed up - not because we think we’re “so important”. - need more time alone because we often experience sensory overload and overstimulation, and socialising can take a lot out of us - not because we think we’re “better” than anyone else.

asking autistic people: do people often describe you as ‘too nice’? i sometimes like this about myself bc it means i accept everyone and give people the benefit of doubt, but i dislike it bc it is also how people hurt me and take advantage. it does not actually protect me.

It’s wild that when an autistic person is happy and thriving some people will doubt that they are autistic. Maybe because autism is identified using a deficit and struggles based approach, some people genuinely think it’s impossible for an autistic person to be happy and thrive?

Despite popular, neuro-normative belief: I am not happier when I'm forced out of my special interest flow states to socialize with folks find my interest is silly, trivial, or boring. I'd much rather play with my interest than pretend I don't have it just to make others like me.

the hardest thing about being autistic is having really strong pattern recognition (immediately being able to tell when someone’s behaviour changes) but being very literal and not being able to read between the lines (so not being able to work out why their behaviour has changed)

Autistic people are often hyperaware of other people, their perceptions and our environments. This can leave us feeling exposed when in public spaces, which can be a vulnerable, draining and terrifying feeling, especially when it goes against our wishes and is beyond our control.

“Flock Together” Written by: Jim Irion Two doves of a feather, stood on an empty road together, When along came a grand fiberglass throng, a train of ungainly vehicles a mile long, Many a sullen passenger were dressed in black, following an elderly couple leading the pack. A decorated US veteran of the second World War, a dearly sweet beloved hailing from English shores, They had been delayed by pompous restriction, what put the couple there was worse than fiction, He fell ill with tremendous trouble breathing, she refused to leave his side despite her wheezing. Similar sick patients were sent to the nursing home, soon many of the elderly began departing in droves, She wept and prayed, wanting, no... needing to stay, the staff had no choice; they must separate, Truly heartbroken, tears streaming down her face, he reached out and said, I love you, my grace. Tragically, one of their sons was following them, leaving behind his beloved wife and six children, Before a decision was made regarding life support, scores of bikers arrived to pay respect once more, Courage, sweat, tears and wheels, they ride together, a family protecting children no matter the weather. As the vehicles approached one thing became clear, license plates showed the many miles traveled here, They bore a shared weight of exhaustive weariness, by far the year before was anything less than serious, As different looking as any one person could be, they were all still here as one human family. High up in the sky more darkness approached, a thunderous maelstrom fit to rain fury below, The doves looked at each other before nudging closer, this road was familiar to them but only a sojourn, With a blink of their eyes and nod of their beak, they flew to follow the transient sadness and bleak. Neither bird nor soul would make such a debate,  our time on Earth is much too shortened by fate, Youngest of the six children was withdrawn and quiet, his older sister noticed; he was unable to hide it, She hugged him close and said everyone needs a friend, indeed the doves knew... to the very end. #ActuallyAutistic #ActuallyADHD #ActuallyHuman #Poet #Poetry #poetrycommunity #AutisticPoet #AutisticPoetry #COVID19 #Covid #Grief #Suffering
