We’re having the #HPAI #GoF debate again, now? We’ve been talking about #HPAI pandemic risk since 1997. (1) good thing those H5 GoF experiments showing mammal-mammal transmission published in 2012, so we’ve known it’s possible, (2) Nature’s at it now in sea lions, seals and mink.

The latest developments with #H5N1 #birdflu are unsettling. But humans & this virus, we have history. I asked a number of people who've been studying it, some for a quarter century, on their thoughts about where things stand now. statnews.com/2023/02/08/trac…

Since I like to criticize @Delta once in a while, it is just fair to also point out nice things. They now have free in-fligh internet for all SkyMiles members. I really like it, that's the way to go.

Please give me the unbridled energy and optimism of the new PIs that give advice on mentoring, grantsmanship, and hiring after having their own lab for one month. With that energy, we could re-discover the effects of interferon even faster!

Oft forgotten, only to be rediscovered immediately in Nature, Science, or Cell.
I wrote about interferon, an oft-forgotten antiviral superhero. It's a badass—and an underappreciated force in coronavirus evolution: Variants that are better at suppressing interferon or dodging it may spread faster or cause worse disease. theatlantic.com/science/arch…
