After years of working with colleagues and students at Rojava’s universities, this was a difficult piece to write. My essay in The Amargi: “Defending Rojava’s Universities.”
Rojava’s universities remain open, but their autonomy is at risk as Damascus moves to absorb northeast Syria’s institutions. @asoschia argues that recognition must protect Kurdish-language education, independent curricula and Jineology.

A closer look at #Rojava’s exclusion from Syria’s university reconstruction. | Sardar Saadi (@asoschia) asks: Is #Germany backing a reconstruction of Syria’s universities that could erase the Kurdish language from higher education? theamargi.com/posts/germanys…
My latest for @the_amargi on Germany’s role in rebuilding Syria’s universities while excluding Rojava. How can higher education be reconstructed by erasing institutions that survived years of war and built alternatives from below?

Rojava’daki üniversitelerden çağrı: “Kürtçe her alanda eğitim dili olmalı”

Just to add Sardar: talking about Rojava in past tense is defeatist, because continuous struggle in imperfect conditions is what made Rojava possible. Universities are inseparable part of this.

Much of this history is little known, even among many Kurds outside Rojhelat.
@RojinMukriyan revisits the months after Iran’s 1979 revolution, when Kurdish towns built local self-rule until the new IRGC crushed it and turned Kurdistan into the Islamic Republic’s first battlefield.

The current war is not the Kurdish and Iranian peoples' war. But the Iranian regime has waged a war against the people of Iran (i.e. Kurds, women, opposition, minorities) for 47 years! If you do not include that in your analysis, you are part of the problem!

Everyone seems to be speaking either on behalf of the Kurds or telling them what to do or not to do. This is utterly problematic, but I will not develop the colonial/supremacist perspective from which it emerges. +

Watching what is unfolding around Iran, I keep thinking how often Kurds have simply been erased from the conversations about this region, but in politics and in academic debates and studies. 1
In a region once again devastated by war, power struggles, and outside interventions, Kurdish movements are still insisting on something simple but powerful that the future must belong to the peoples themselves. 4
