Remember: Game designers in the 80s and 90s were computer science majors who loved literature, classic fantasy and AD&D. There is a very obvious reason the AAA market had been declining for so long. I don't need to spell it out.

Some more pics from that game! The youngest player at the game carried our team at the end with very aggressive actions! lol the rest of us thought it was time to fly away and he chose violence! And it worked for him!

3 years work and I couldn't be more proud. ☠️
Why play as a Pirate, when you can play as a Pirate Werewolf or Pirate Vampire this Halloween? Corpse Kings: The Silent Abyss is out now. 300 pages of incredible Pirate Horror Adventure await! ☠️

This post sounds very chud, but it is both true and the most basic observation about Breaking Bad. Anyone who says otherwise is either ignorant or straight up dishonest. BB is so engrossing because we root for a weak, impotent man in his mid-life crisis rising to

While I detest dark patterns and it's one of the many reasons why I've been avoiding modern games, this a powerful lesson for game design.
Incentives is what drives player's behavior, not options.
Decompilation isn’t just for games. This guy on Instagram is decompiling popular apps breaking down how they work, monetize, and… use dark patterns. instagram.com/reel/DeUlQTQxv…

Danno is one of those gamer's gamers.
He did Arnecon and was in there gaming like a champ, and now he is back at it at another convention D&D'ing his heart out.
I can't keep up with that kind of dedication.
I think I slept half a day when I got back from just one convention. 😆

it was excellent!
Arnecon 4 Recap
Officially the first game played this year - Outdoor Survival.
@SpaceCowboyVFX was a huge hit when he unleashed this classic board game he brought along after the guest dinner.
I don't want to incriminate anyone, but yes, that is Mrs. Double D playing.
She abandoned the guys in the bar to go play a game like a true hardcore gamer.

At long last we have finally created the remote control war pretending to be a video game from Orson Scott Card’s classic “Don’t Create The Remote Control War Pretending To Be A Video Game”

Ukrainian-developed FPV drone simulator “Remote Reaper: FPV Drone” has officially left Early Access, with version 1.0 now available on Steam.
Developed in collaboration with military pilots, the simulator focuses on combat FPV drone operations and introduces several features in its full release, including armored vehicles with modeled vulnerable zones, electronic warfare effects that can disrupt video feeds and control signals during the final stage of an attack, and a customizable drone editor.
Version 1.0 also adds configurable weather conditions, custom mission editing, real-time flights with other pilots and a racing mode.
Players can use FPV hardware or a gamepad with realistic flight physics, or opt for simplified controls using a keyboard and mouse.

Best explanation for magic using ancient languages was r. scott bakker's second apocalypse IMO, where incantations are in dead languages because living languages change over time and the ambiguities in the precise meanings and connotations of words this produces are dangerous.

Arnecon 4 has come and gone.
Lots of indie creators running their own games for other indie creators.
Such a great weekend of 247 non-stop D&D games.
Had a great time playing in a big Barrows & Borderlands game run by @SpaceCowboyVFX himself at @ArneconTFotT yesterday evening. ⚔️ #ttrpg #dnd #arnecon

The ShadowSun kickstarter has been a bit exhausting, but it is almost over. All writing is done, editing proceeds rapidly. I am on track to release the PDFs in roughly 2-3 weeks from today. Feels good.
We are at $99,000 as I write this. Amazing!

WoW gradually shifted from being designed as a world to inhabit to being a content delivery system. "Content delivery system" is now the normative way of building an MMO ("theme park" design) because players bitch when there is any measurable advantage to class X under condition Y or they encountered some unfair situation.
I used to bitch all the time about how warriors were fundamentally gimped if you were playing solo.
Problem is that a believable world has to be able to tell players: "Yeah, that sucked. Deal with it." Because once it stops doing that it becomes obvious that the world exists for the player, not independent of the player.
Long story short, you eventually reach a point where balance, convenience, and legibility can only come at the cost of the world's verisimilitude.

As @ArneconTFotT starts to wrap up, I would like to express my appreciation for being invited by the good people at from the Arneson camp, such as @Blackmoor_Film. I would furthermore like to express my gratitude to @WeeWheaton and Dan the Final Arbiter for running games in my stead as I went through a frustrating period of laryngitis.

🐉 Thirty men entered Dave Arneson’s dungeon. Only ONE came out.
Before D&D was even published, Arneson sent six players and 24 NPC soldiers beneath Castle Blackmoor in pursuit of an evil wizard.
They encountered deadly monsters, discovered an enchanted sword, and became hopelessly lost.
Eventually, nearly everyone was dead.
The lone survivor was Greg Svenson, whose character escaped with the magical sword and sold it to the Baron for 150 gold pieces.
He later discovered he’d been robbed blind. 😂
By the time the adventure ended, it was 4 AM.
Greg was hooked. His character would become the legendary Great Svenny.
More than 50 years later, we’re still exploring dungeons, fighting monsters, and making questionable decisions about magical treasure.
Here’s to Dave Arneson, the man who helped start it all.
Happy ArneCon! ❤️
