The story of the Old Mutual vs Zim government is not spoken about enough, given their move to the VFEX, this is the video on the full story.

$40,000 worth of GPUs
๐ง๐ต๐ถ๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ก๐: the largest African language model ever trained from scratch, at 1.5 billion parameters. Not a fine tune, this was trained from the ground up for Africa. ๐
Trained on 12 African languages, it beats models from Google, Meta, Alibaba and HuggingFace on African language modelling and translation while being up to 8x smaller.
๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ก๐ doesn't belong to us. The weights are open and free to use commercially, so researchers can build on a base that doesn't treat African languages as an afterthought.
Weights in the comments.
Thanks to @UNDP, @AIHub4SD and CINECA for the GPUs and the support. None of this happens without them.
The way AI-generated drama quality has improved is crazy, some scenes you cant even tell if its ai or real actors. I can only imagine what the film and TV industry will look like in the next two years.

Being a Zimbabwean developer is something I wear with pride๐ฟ๐ผ We build with limited resources, face unique challenges, and still keep creating. The future of Zimbabwean tech is being written one app at a time

Could Zimbabwe finally have its own homegrown dating app?
Several local dating apps have come and gone, but none have really taken off. Now, a new Zimbabwean-built app, AppMe, is hoping to change that.

What a whirlwind week with the dating app appme.co.zw. I didn't expect so many people to use it so quickly.
Since launch I have hardly rested. I've been fixing bugs and adding critical features, especially the ones that make the app safer for women. Without AI, it would have taken me months to reach this point.
One thing I learned very fast: letting people request a WhatsApp number straight away was WRONG idea.
So I changed it. Now before someone shares their WhatsApp, they can:
- Ask vetting questions
- Chat a little inside the app first
- Block or report users
- Pause or delete their account
One tip for other developers: if you build your app with PHP, custom CSS, and plain JavaScript, AI uses fewer tokens, your 5 hour can actually build a whole working app.
The difference i have seen between fable and chatgpt 5.6 is fable thinks ahead and chatgpt follows instructions. Fable jus knows whats needs to be done without telling it much
After feedback from ladies around safety, Iโve added new features on AppMe.
You can now ask questions before accepting a WhatsApp request, and thereโs also brief in-app chatting so you can vet someone first.
Once youโre comfortable, you can accept the request. Safety first, connections after.
I built a simple Zimbabwean dating app: appme.co.zw โค๏ธ๐ฟ๐ผ
I donโt have money for ads, so Iโm trying something different. The first 100 women who create real profiles will get $1 airtime each.
Help support local tech. Try it, share it, roast it ๐

That $100 is coming from my other project, DomainRegister.co.zw, which I launched last week.
No investor. No big budget. Just building and reinvesting.
I need your support on this one. I've spent months building this project. Over the years, I've released several projects that have helped many, and this latest one is especially important to me. It's my attempt to turn my passion for building apps into a sustainable business.

My biggest goal has always been to build tools that help Zimbabwe's internet ecosystem grow and thrive.
That's why I created DomainRegister. It makes registering a .co.zw domain simpler, faster, and more affordable.

Domains are just $5 per year. You can also manage your DNS records and easily connect your domain to your website hosting account or VPS.
If you're a developer, business owner, startup founder, or creator looking to establish your online presence, I'd love for you to give it a try.
