Zimbabwean-born Google executive James Manyika met President Mnangagwa in New York on Wednesday, 23 September. The President is in New York for the 81st UN General Assembly, where he's due to deliver Zimbabwe's national statement today. AI has been a theme of his trip so far. He's been talking about how AI and digital connectivity are driving rapid global change. Manyika is Google's Senior Vice President of Research, Labs, Technology & Society. In plain terms, he oversees how Google develops and deploys its most ambitious technology, much of it AI. This isn't the first time he's engaged with Zimbabwe's leadership. He's been part of ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera's push to connect with Zimbabweans holding senior roles in global tech. Lecturers, students, parents: how is your school handling AI and assignments? It's become a cat and mouse game. Students use AI to write assignments, then run them through the same detectors lecturers use, like Turnitin and GPTZero, and tweak until they pass. Now there are "humaniser" tools that rewrite AI text so detectors think a person wrote it. Some colleges abroad have given up and scrapped assignments altogether. Pretty significant savings for those using ChatGPT. Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5.5 Anthropic says Opus 5.5 matches Fable 5.1 “on most tasks” while costing about 40% less to run than Opus 5. Anthropic has raised its five-hour usage limits and has and has started giving subscription users a rate limit reset, a feature that exists on ChatGPT. This is the first model since Anthropic leader proposed slowing down on AI development to prevent apocalyptic scenarios for mankind. Frontier models (what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini are generally called because they are the most capable) have gotten significantly better especially at coding tasks since about December last year when the concept of "AI as Agents" took off. Agents can execute a series of tasks independently, in a way that, previously, on humans could handle. Tasks like planning the building of a piece of software, doing the actual coding, testing it, and even going live with it on the internet. This is said to be providing significant productivity to businesses and its predicted to result in technology job losses globally.
