The Forbidden Folios: Sams Photofact Books, the DMCA, and the Enclosure of Knowledge In the quiet of a Southern California garage lab, local AI models hum on silicon that would have seemed magical in 1946, rest three massive volumes that once armed an entire generation of independent minds. These are the Howard W. Sams Photofact service books, donated by a sharp-eyed friend on X who saw the call for lost knowledge and acted. They are not light reading. Each folder or bound volume is a complete dossier on a specific radio or television chassis: full schematics with every resistor, capacitor, coil, and vacuum tube value annotated; pin-by-pin voltage and resistance charts; scope waveforms; alignment instructions for IF strips and tuners; exploded views of tuners and cabinets; parts lists cross-referenced to Sams stock numbers; and even notes on common failure modes observed in the field. A repairman in 1955 could walk into a living room with one of these under his arm, a tube caddy, and a VTVM, and bring a dead set back to life, or improve it. The knowledge was not locked behind a dealer login or an NDA. It was published, sold openly, and expected to be used by anyone with skill and curiosity. That was the era when repair was a right, not a privilege granted by the OEM. Today, creating and distributing equivalent detailed repair documentation for modern devices has been made effectively illegal or legally untenable by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998, specifically Section 1201. Section 1201 prohibits circumventing any technological protection measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under copyright law. It also bans the manufacture, distribution, or trafficking of any technology, product, or service primarily designed or produced to circumvent such measures. Modern devices, from smartphones and smart TVs to tractors, cars, and medical equipment, are packed with embedded software and firmware protected by TPMs: encryption, authentication protocols, secure boot chains, and diagnostic-mode locks. To produce a true Photofact-style manual today you would need precise internal schematics, signal paths, diagnostic procedures, and often firmware details. Obtaining that information almost always requires reverse-engineering the software, which involves making copies and analyzing protected code, and/or circumventing TPMs to access locked diagnostic interfaces, dump firmware, or read protected memory regions. Once you have circumvented a TPM, even solely to diagnose or repair a device you own, you have violated Section 1201. Publishing the resulting detailed manual, diagrams, or step-by-step repair instructions can expose you to further liability under the anti-trafficking provisions, because the manual itself effectively provides others with the means or knowledge to circumvent. Manufacturers have used or threatened these provisions, along with ordinary copyright claims on the expressive elements of diagrams and manuals, to chill independent repair documentation. iFixit and the Electronic Frontier Foundation have repeatedly documented cases where publishing repair information triggered cease-and-desist letters or legal pressure, even when the underlying use was non-infringing repair or fair use. Importantly, Section 117 of the Copyright Act still permits certain copying of software for maintenance and repair purposes. However, Section 1201’s anti-circumvention rules have effectively overridden that permission in practice.
