Chess philanthropist. Let's salute Nigerian chess master and humanitarian Tunde Onakoya on his birthday. Born today in 1994, the top-ranked chess player learned the game as a child in the barber shop of his slum neighbourhood in Ikorodu. He established the NGO Chess in Slums Africa as a way to empower slum children through chess, which expands their mental skills and gives them enjoyment and purpose and in some cases scholarships.

Hier word ge-Oom en ge-Tannie, of dit nou besigheid of persoonlike dinge is wat om stomende koffiekoppies bespreek word. Besigheid is natuurlik 'n baie onbelangrike onderwerp en word eers aangeraak nadat babafoto's bekyk is en almal se gesondheid bespreek is.
Jy hoef ook nooit te wonder wat iemand van 'n spesifieke voorstel dink nie, want hulle sal vir jou sê. Sommer reguit ook. Jy kan "loep naai" as jou idee geweeg en te lig gevind is. (Selfs díe gesegde word nie kwaadwillig gebruik nie. Dis letterlik net streeksmond vir, "Nee dankie.")

Kom reis gerus deur die fokol. Jy sal nie armer daar uitry nie.

Will SCOPA do its work on state capture at PRASA?
I want to be fair to SCOPA. It is drowning in malfeasance from every level of the state, and it must prioritise. And SCOPA has not been the worst offender. That distinction belongs to the Portfolio Committee on Transport, which in 2017 and 2018 spent its energy attacking the lawyers who had uncovered the corruption rather than the people who committed it, and whose chairperson later told the Zondo Commission that she “toed the party line” when an inquiry was called for. It belongs to the Joint Ethics Committee, which has sat on our complaints against six Members of Parliament implicated at PRASA since 2022, forcing us into three years of litigation in the Western Cape High Court against Parliament’s own trench lawfare.
But SCOPA’s record is not clean. In November 2016 an ANC member reminded the committee that it had the power to summon Lucky Montana. It never did. In February 2020 the Committee resolved to seek delinquent-director proceedings against PRASA’s former boards and to hold a full parliamentary inquiry. Neither happened. Across a decade, SCOPA has never called a single one of the people whom the Public Protector, National Treasury’s forensic investigators, the courts and the Zondo Commission identified as central to the looting: not Sfiso Buthelezi, not Montana, not Makhensa Mabunda, not Roy Moodley, not Mario Ferreira. Two of them sat in Parliament while SCOPA heard evidence about them.

Fernwood Bakery on Maple Street in Galveston, Texas. Every morning at 8:10, the same thing happens. The door is propped open for deliveries. A tan mixed-breed with a gray muzzle walks in. Ignores the bread. Ignores the customers. Goes directly to the owner, Rosa, 67, who lost her husband of 41 years last spring. The dog, who the staff calls Dulce, stands up and wraps both paws around Rosa's shoulders. Holds for about fifteen seconds. Then leaves. This has happened every morning for six months.
