Doug Ford says Highway 413 will "cut gridlock by more than an hour." But here’s what he won’t tell you.
The highway will:
· Cut through 2,000 acres of farmland
· Pave over 400 acres of protected Greenbelt land
· Cross 85 waterways and impact 220 wetlands
· Destroy or partially destroy 75 wetlands — 28 of them provincially significant
It threatens 29 federally listed species at risk, including:
· Redside Dace — a coldwater minnow species
· Rapids Clubtail — a dragonfly species
· Western Chorus Frog
· Red-headed Woodpecker
· Blanding’s Turtle
The highway would pave over the Main Humber River valley crossing — the largest remaining critical habitat for these endangered species. The government’s own environmental report acknowledges that "compensation/offsetting measures for the species have shown little success in recent studies" — yet offers no real avoidance or mitigation.
The cost? Estimated at $14 to $18 billion — Ontario’s most expensive highway ever. That’s $5,000 for every Ontario family. The opposition and environmental groups have asked the Financial Accountability Office to investigate the true cost, but the government refuses to disclose the numbers.
And the developers? A 2021 investigation found eight developers own 3,300 acres along the route — and have donated at least $813,000 to the Ontario PC Party since 2014. The government even considered a "developer proposed" realignment to avoid land owned by Nick Cortellucci — a PC donor who received a Minister’s Zoning Order in 2021. That reroute would have delayed the project by at least one year and pushed Highway 410 construction back two years.
You promised gridlock relief. You delivered a developer giveaway.

NEW: Ontario teachers are finding some classroom supplies cost significantly more on the Ford government’s new Staples portal.
I asked Education Minister Paul Calandra about it: “it's not meant to be perfect from day one, but it will get there.”

To answer your question, that island is currently one of Toronto’s biggest tourist attractions. Too bad it is not very accessible. The airport sits squarely between that attraction and Toronto’s ability to access it. Its presence itself disables Toronto’s ability to realize a civic and economic crown jewel.
Toronto has no other big downtown parks. Yet the city is expected to grow by some 700K+ by 2051. A lot of those people will live in condos, and the growth will demand not only housing but public space, recreation, culture, and tourism. Cities cannot compete if they cannot offer quality of life.
The question is what is the highest and best use for the current airport lands? Should a rare piece of central waterfront be dedicated to aviation, or should it serve the broader public as parks, recreation and city-building?
The island airport was always a compromise. It was given license to exist as long as it stayed small and did not grow and disturb the park. That was the point of the Tripartite Agreement that Ford seeks to overturn. He wants to create an airport serving six times what it currently serves (1.7 million today, 10 million tomorrow). It would not only ruin the island but the city around it and the very idea of a boutique airport.
Ford’s action is an affront. It is a fundamental breaking of a social and legal contract. It is an authoritarian abuse of power—an act of Trumpism.
Would we replace Central Park with a parking lot, the Louvre with office space, Niagara Falls with a hydroelectric dam, the Eiffel Tower with office towers, Parliament Hill with a ferris wheel, or Stanley Park with an airport?
No. Why? Because these unique sites have a higher and better use. The same is true of the Toronto Islands.
Air travel capacity can go many places. Toronto has only one downtown waterfront.
Let’s use it in a way that maximizes net public benefit—not narrow private interests.

A very dangerous new nightmare we are living in Gaza City, and no one in the world is paying attention to it.
Days ago, the Israeli army installed huge military cranes, each about 30 meters tall, on the eastern areas it controls. These cranes are equipped with machine guns and cameras, and they fire randomly and almost continuously at tents, streets, and exposed neighborhoods.
Gaza City is extremely narrow, only 10 kilometers wide. A single crane at that height is enough to expose the entire city from east to west. Every street, every square, every tent, every house has become completely exposed. There is no place to hide, and not a single moment of safety.
In just the past two days, three people were killed by fire from these cranes. One of them was sitting quietly with his father in a small café, trying to breathe for a few minutes. Hours later, a 5year old girl was killed while playing near her home.
These cranes have turned the entire city into an open field. The latest military technologies are directed at civilians. We have become an open testing ground for their new weapons. The horror is not just in the sound… it is the constant feeling of being an exposed target at all times, where even children cannot run in the street without fear.

We’ve been warning for years that this is where AI was leading: mass surveillance, automated bombings, the imprisonment of freethinkers. It’s urgent that we collectively boycott OpenAI and ChatGPT. They are building the engines of our oppression.
Tonight, we reached an agreement with the Department of War to deploy our models in their classified network.
In all of our interactions, the DoW displayed a deep respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible outcome.
AI safety and wide distribution of benefits are the core of our mission. Two of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems. The DoW agrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement.
We also will build technical safeguards to ensure our models behave as they should, which the DoW also wanted. We will deploy FDEs to help with our models and to ensure their safety, we will deploy on cloud networks only.
We are asking the DoW to offer these same terms to all AI companies, which in our opinion we think everyone should be willing to accept. We have expressed our strong desire to see things de-escalate away from legal and governmental actions and towards reasonable agreements.
We remain committed to serve all of humanity as best we can. The world is a complicated, messy, and sometimes dangerous place.
