DB pension plans with funding valuations taking place now will be doing so as stock markets have been falling around the world, potentially weakening funding positions. A sobering position against current calls for pension fund surpluses to be extracted by employers.

Australia's pension regulator has found numerous 'concerns' over how mega superfunds are valuing & managing private market assets, including conflicts of interests. This should be a wake up call for the UK as pension funds are pushed into private markets apra.gov.au/news-and-publica…

In England, an estimated 75 per cent of adults over 65 will face care expenses during their lifetime, with one-in-seven incurring costs of more than £100,000.
Despite this, most people aren’t planning for future care costs.

A big increase in employer NI focused on the low paid comes on top of a big increase in the national living wage. This will result in an historically big increase in the cost of employing low paid workers, especially those working part time.
Replying to @TheIFS @IsaacDelestre
The cost of hiring a part-time minimum worker will go up by 11% in real terms next year, with the rise in employer NICs contributing at 7%, and the rise in the National Living Wage at 4%.
This increase is bigger than the introduction of the National Living Wage in 2016.

We should think about this change in coordination with the rise in the minimum wage in terms of pushing up the employer cost of employing lower paid people.
Of course, these changes also incentivise contracting with self-employed people compared to employing an employee.
Replying to @TheIFS
The cut in the point at which employer NICs is paid means the largest percentage rise in labour costs is for employing lower wage workers.
It will cost 5.4% more to employ someone on £11,500 a year (10th percentile of earnings), compared to 2.5% for a median earner.

#socialcare garnered just 36 seconds in the #itvdebate and yet is a hugely important issue affecting millions. That’s why we’re launching a set of asks that we want all parties to consider during the General Election campaign, and once in government, more info here 👇

Ageing societies arise from low birth rates and extended lifespans, leading to fewer youths and more older persons. Instead of highlighting the rise in the elderly, we need to emphasize longevity, shifting focus from age to sustained life quality.
