A step in the right direction for antidepressant labelling but informed consent is more than a list of warnings. More on how the updated MHRA guidance came about and what this means for patients. #PSSD #antidepressants #MHRA rxisk.org/mhra-announces-new…

What ‘pseudoaddiction’ was to opioids, ‘discontinuation syndrome’ is to SSRIs.
Both are Pharma backed terms with questionable scientific foundations, used to downplay drug harms and protect commercial interests.
Both are clearly euphemisms which protect profits over patients.
Fucking unbelievable. For some historical context, pharma led a campaign nearly 30 years ago to frame antidepressant withdrawal as "discontinuation" rather than withdrawal to characterize it as more benign and self-limited. "Withdrawal" has since become the accepted terminology. Goldberg and several coauthors used “antidepressant withdrawal” in their own consensus statement earlier this year, yet here they are, retreating to old propaganda techniques.

WHEN MEDICINE DOESN’T HAVE AN ANSWER, DOES THE INVESTIGATION END — OR BEGIN?
A patient reports devastating changes after taking a prescribed medication.
Tests come back normal.
Symptoms persist.
The patient says, “I don’t feel like myself anymore.”
But what if the tests simply aren’t measuring what has changed?
An unexplained symptom is not proof that nothing is wrong.
It is a reason to ask better scientific questions.
What biological mechanisms have we not yet investigated?
What are we missing?
And how many patients are still waiting for someone to take those questions seriously?
Science advances when unanswered questions are investigated, not dismissed.
For Henry, for all we have lost, and for every patient still searching for answers. ❤️

With millions of people taking psychiatric drugs, it's clear not everyone will experience violent or suicidal reactions when taking them. But what drug regulatory agency warnings confirm, is that a percentage of the population will.
Of nearly 410 psychiatric drug warnings, 27 warned of violence, aggression, hostility, mania, psychosis or homicidal ideation; 49 warned of self-harm or suicide/suicidal ideation; 17 were for addiction or withdrawal effects; and 27 were linked to Serotonin Syndrome found in antidepressant use and marked by symptoms that include agitation, restlessness and confusion.
Professor David Healy a leading psychopharmacology expert and Professor of Psychiatry at Bangor University in Wales said, “Violence and other potentially criminal behaviour caused by prescription drugs are medicine’s best kept secret.”

Encouraging @MHRAgovuk have recognised #PSSD – by name – 35 years after the first case was identified. In contrast, & unlike other concerned regulators, @FDA have still not responded to the 2018 Citizens; Petition. Is this a record for patient unsafety?

It took an expert review and sustained patient pressure to get this far. The same regulator that has long downplayed or slow-walked these issues now says the risks "are not new."
Will it actually change how these drugs are handed out, or just give the MHRA an opportunity to say, "Well, we did all we could"?

New updated guidance from MHRA on #antidepressants. Updates include the following-
“The term “Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction” (“PSSD”) will be added to the PILs of antidepressants associated with a risk of sexual dysfunction that may continue even after the drug is stopped”
The MHRA is introducing a series of new measures to strengthen how risks associated with antidepressant medicines are communicated to patients, carers and healthcare professionals. Read the full drug safety update here: brnw.ch/21x6qlr

All these “anti psychiatry” patients
and critical psychiatrists meddling to get proper safety warnings for antidepressants. How awful of them.
On a serious note, remarkable work by patients and their families in getting this implemented.

Let’s see if @FDA follows suit on warning about PSSD.
History has a way of repeating itself.
Back in 2003, the UK led the way in warning about antidepressants and the risk of suicidal behavior.
The FDA didn’t require antidepressant black-box suicide warnings until 2004.
Twenty-three years later, are we watching history repeat itself?

The Royal College of Psychiatrists has apologised to survivors of child abuse, domestic abuse and sexual violence who were harmed by psychiatric services.
An apology from @rcpsych is important.
But now we need to know what happened.
How many victims were misdiagnosed?
How many were medicated and forced into treatments and hospitals?
How many were told that their memories were false?
How many had abuse disclosures reframed as mental illness?
How many victims lost their families because psychiatrists told them that the abuse never occurred?
How many of those diagnoses ended up in family court, criminal proceedings, social care records and medical records?
How do we help those victims correct their records?
How many victims died after being gaslit that their experiences of abuse were not real?
I’ve launched a Parliamentary petition calling for a national inquiry.
Let’s get this into Parliament.

I still think back to when my doctor offered me antidepressants after my husband’s sudden death.
Even in my darkest moments, something deep inside me knew not to take the pill. I remember telling her, “I think Zoloft is what killed my husband. But more importantly, my husband just died. Aren’t I supposed to hurt?”
Now, as I near the end of writing my book and find myself revisiting some of those darkest moments, I’m profoundly grateful I trusted that instinct and allowed myself to feel the full weight of my grief rather than trying to numb it.
I cried because I loved. And eventually, I laughed again, even while I was grieving.
Our emotions are part of what makes us human. The pain, the joy, the sorrow, the love. I believe they are among God’s greatest gifts. And I wouldn’t want to lose or numb any of them.

Gaslighting is defined as a form of psychological manipulation used to make a person doubt their own reality and their perception of events. The term comes from the 1944 film Gaslight, where a husband manipulates his wife into believing she’s going insane by dimming the gas lights in their home and then denying that the lights are flickering.
In the same way the husband abused and manipulated his wife in the film, psychiatrists are doing it for real. They dismiss, invalidate, trivialise and generally make less of patients and their reported symptoms while pathologising them, leading to patients doubting their own reality, perceptions, and/or their sanity.
Gaslighting is cruel and inhumane. The comparison with psychiatry is not coincidental.
