NEW: Study confirms Tonga volcano had the highest plume ever recorded.
At 35 miles high, the ash cloud generated by the eruption is also the first to have been observed in the mesosphere, a layer of the atmosphere more commonly associated with shooting stars.

Incredible new analysis: parallax observations by GOES & Himawari show that the Hunga Tonga eruption sent its plume of ash and gas to the mesosphere.
This is likely a new record in the satellite era.
