Big eruption from Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai. Lots of ice. Some SO2. Ash difficult to detect with the usual methods. Cloud-top temperatures reaching 182 K (-91°C), likely stratospheric (>16.5 km asl). #HungaTongaHungaHaapai #HungaTonga

First #Sentinel5P #TROPOMI overpass ~1.3 hours after the onset of today's #eruption on #Iceland's #Reykjanes peninsula shows very high SO₂ column amounts in plume spreading SE. Est. SO₂ emission rate is ~1400 kg/s (~120,000 tons/day). @Vedurstofan @CopernicusEU @rockhardIES

This stunning first image was taken at 11:50 UTC on 18 March and shows cloudy conditions over Europe, Africa & the Atlantic 🤩
This level of detail wasn't possible over Europe & Africa from a geostationary orbit before!

BREAKING: An ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Russia is impacting flights in the state of Alaska. As a safety precaution, @AlaskaAir has canceled some flights to and from Alaska and within the state. Guests can check the status of their flight at alaskaair.com.
Updated Himawari-9 observations of the ash and SO2 from the #Sheveluch (#Shiveluch) eruption. Animation goes from 13 UTC on 10 April to 23:50 UTC on 12 April. Some aspects of the SO2 transport remind me of #Raikoke
Looks like a big eruption from #Sheveluch occurred overnight (local time). Plume becomes identifiable around 13 UTC on 10 April. Some clear ash and SO2 signals in Himawari-9 AHI data.
Come hear about our work at @oxford_EODG on the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption in the #iavcei2023 Hunga session today. We have two talks: one in the morning on @IA_Taylor's work on the HTHH SO2 (10H) and one in the afternoon where I'm going to talk about ice (11H)!
Exciting to see the launch of #MTGI1! Congrats to all invovled.

#Sentinel5P #TROPOMI data for the #MaunaLoa #eruption showing ~0.2 Tg SO₂ on Nov 28. SO₂ furthest east is at higher altitude than the plume nearer the #volcano. For reference, we estimate that the 1984 Mauna Loa eruption emitted ~1.2 Tg SO₂. @CopernicusEU @BIRA_IASB @ESA_EO

Satellite data from @NASAJPL's AIRS instrument (12:45 UTC Nov 28) shows #volcanic SO₂ emitted by the initial phase of the #MaunaLoa #eruption drifting NE of #Hawaii in the mid- to upper-troposphere. Note data gap east of the red line. @airesEO @NASAEarth @NWSHonolulu @NASA

Tonga volcano had highest plume ever recorded. The research led by Dr Simon Proud @simon_sat and Dr Andrew Prata @andyprata has been published in the journal @ScienceMagazine, and you can read more about it here ox.ac.uk/node/7629962

NEW: Study confirms Tonga volcano had the highest plume ever recorded.
At 35 miles high, the ash cloud generated by the eruption is also the first to have been observed in the mesosphere, a layer of the atmosphere more commonly associated with shooting stars.
